Is Skimp increasing skp. file size instead of decreasing it?

Hi, I’m trying to reduce object sizes using Skimp, which I’ve just installed. After running Simplify Selection and reducing the geometry to around 70–80%, the file size doesn’t decrease — instead, it increases by about 5 MB.

I tested this on one or two models (10–17 MB each) inside .skp file. Purge Unused doesn’t change anything. I tested it few times on different models with similar effect.

Am I doing something incorrectly?

It’s hard to say without seeing the .skp file.

Are you still using SketchUp 2021?

I am using SketchUp 2026. I am not sure how to update it in my profile. I am attaching sample model before Skimping. It’s 10MB. I will attach the Skimped model in my next post.

Sofa .skp (10.1 MB)

Sofa_skimped.skp (13.8 MB)

Your Skimped version includes an Environment image which the original doesn’t have. Delete it and you should see the file size drop.I expect you selected the Photoreal face style in that model.
Sofa_skimped.skp (6.3 MB)

also, important, the amount of geometry is NOT the only thing that makes this couch heavy. if you remove all the materials, you’ll find that there are about 5mb of material in there.

lovely! THANKS A LOT DAVE! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

bath tap before skimping.skp (7.6 MB)

bath tap after skimping.skp (11.5 MB)

I’m having the same file‑size issue with these models. The Environment file has already been deleted.

The after skimp one has more geometry. Not sure why optimizing the geometry would make it have more edges and faces.

I ran CleanUp 3 on the model and also removed the texture maps from the material.

How to get to forum profile the easy way (...click to expand...)

Click on your (A) avatar in any post, then in the popup click again on the avatar or your name.
Once in the Account page, click on the secondary Profile link. (2nd row of links, 3rd link from left)

Scroll down the Profile subpage to SketchUp Version and delete any versions you no longer use and add any that you do.

That sounds contradictory to the purpose of skimp, and suggests a bug in it.
