Hello community, My name is Axel.
I’m reaching out because I’m stuck and really hoping someone can help me… I’m a beginner with SketchUp. I’ve been working for the past 15 days on a model in which I integrate models from 3D Warehouse.
To be specific, it’s an outdoor design for a house (plants, trees, flowers…). Everything was going well, but for the past three days, I haven’t been able to add any new models, and I can no longer move around the model smoothly.
I’ve tried working with the model locally (on my iPad Pro 4th generation – iPadOS 18.5) and also via cloud connect, but the issue remains the same. Every action causes problems and often leads to crashes.
The file is 189MB, mostly due to models from 3D Warehouse.
Your file is pretty big for using SketchUp for iPad or SketchUp for web. There are a lot of excessively large texture images from the plants you collected from the 3D Warehouse.
You should also correct the face orientation. There should be no visible back faces. And you should be using groups and components for the geometry you’re creating. It’ll make your model easier to work with.
Wow! Thank you so much for this quick and detailed response! So I need to modify the size of my models, review the tags that are causing issues, and work on the faces orientations… I’ll go look for some tutorials to help me out. I had a feeling it was all a bit too simple. Thanks again!
Proper file management is critical in maintaining performance and in making your model easier to work with. On the iPad and with web-based SketchUp you’ll have to do that all manually. I opened your model in the desktop version so I could use some extensions to automatically fix what I did and to show the results. I expect you’ll soon want to upgrade to the desktop version to get better performance, the option to use a variety of extensions, and to have access to LayOut for documentation.
Also, assign your high-poly plant components to a tag/layer and switch it off while modeling. Learn to create scenes for different purposes. One fast scene for modeling with all presentation styles switched off, a presentation scene with all the “goodies” turned on, etc.
