Ideas on how to model this free form?

I noticed on your screen capture you have CFL Simple Loft installed. That can help too. You can make squares at each segment vertice and loft them. Then blend transitions with smooth (smoov)

The first plug in I mentioned (CLF Perpendicular Face Tool) allows for your own custom shape to be attached perpendicular to the point. It can also allow you to attach the same shape to multiple locations on the segment. That sculpture looks like it was made with a follow me with smooth size transitions and rotations.

I divided the wire into different paths and used the follow me with rectangles. Then I used Artisan to Smooth and Subdivide.

Just an idea, but keep in mind that these few forum posts alone are unlikely to be enough for you to create that shape in detail. You need to know how to work with qauds and subdivs, as well as how to use the tools available in SketchUp (including the right extensions), and this takes time and practice.
