Is there a Ruby API that allows me to obtain SKM thumbnails without having to load them.

The save_thumbnail method is used to generate a thumbnail for any SKP file - not necessarily the loaded model.

The .skm file is just a zip file, rename it (e,g. my_material.skm>>my_material.zip ) and inside you can find the doc_thumbnail.png.
