How to apply materials by Tag?

No doubt, but it is such a basic concept for success in SU, I would always want anyone reading this thread to get it…even someone that clearly doesn’t understand the “why”.

And the problem is they have admitted they are a troll and every post, including this one, gives them more oxygen.
Should just be removed.

You should try reading first.

The file is organized that way because it was modeled somewhere else and IMPORTED!!!

Also, whether the geometry is in UNTAGGED or not makes no difference whatsoever to help solve the problem at hand. I would still have my components inside components inside components. And I would still need to access all of them one by one to change the materials.

In fact, thanks to using tags in the way I am using them, together with the extension @mihai.s provided, I am now able to go about it in a reasonable amount of time. Granted, this should be a 2 minute task instead, but it is what it is.

The real shame in this whole thing is you will never actually learn how simple it is to do what you want. You will continue to bite your own nose to spite your face.

I did read…LOL.

I import 3D civil files often. I reassign elements to my Tag structure after grouping them. Takes maybe 30 minutes.

You could then easily apply a material to each group in seconds…using glass as an example:

  1. Isolate the glass using the imported layers (now tags).
  2. Set all the glass to untagged and group.
  3. Assign the group to a tag…glass with whatever prefix you use in your standards.
  4. Apply the glass material to the group.

Now every time you add additional glass elements to this group they have the same material.

To make things really fast, use a custom template.

That’s simply not true.

This topic has been going around for years. Search the forum and you will find countless discussions about it. If it was that simple as extruding, that would not be the case.

Even this thread took multiple replies and different approaches to get close to a possible workaround, which in the end required an extension and a very specific option of selection inside said extension. And it’s only half way there, because if you want to change the material again, of all your glasses for instance, you will have to do it all over again! Instead of just swapping the material of the tag by another one.

Honestly, the solution has been chosen but you just keep on uselessly babbling with no contribution whatsoever. It doesn’t get more troll than that.

How do I set all my glass at once to untagged, if it is scattered across different components and I don’t want to explode them?

How can I group them all when they are part of components already??

Not if you use the method I just posted.

Also it is generally best to not nest multiple components inside components. It is a better practice to nest groups in components. The concept here is it makes it easier to make a component unique. There’s always exceptions to this, but most of the time it will be quicker.

If the CAD file was layered correctly, you should be able to isolate all the glass in the tags panel. If not, then yes it could be a pain.

The CAD files I import tend to have dozens of layers so every element is on its own layer. Isolating elements is very easy.

Where you will really see the benefit of only tagging groups or components is when you create scenes for LO. It is much easier and faster to manage the whole file, which is why I always stress the importance of no free floating geometry and only tagging groups and components.

It was layered correctly, I can isolate glass just fine. Except it is inside components.

And again, its not only about all the glass, but then all the slabs, rails, louvers, frames, etc.

Sure I can spend 2 hours applying materials to this. Then, the next day I get new blocks to import and all my work is lost.

It looks like all the glass is the same material? If so, simply sample the material and edit it to what you want.

@ShynnSup please take a moment and reflect on this.

What do you want out of this topic? Are you looking for a solution to help you? If so, several community members have presented potential solutions for use both inside and outside of SketchUp.

Are you asking for a future change in the way that SketchUp handles materials and tags? If so, please post in the Feature Request with a clear illustration of how you think it could work in the future.

Are you just looking to vent because SketchUp does not work the way you want it to? If so, I get it, but you need to find a different way to express yourself. Your posts have been flagged multiple times and this thread will be shut down if we see any more flags come through based on your comments.

All of the above, summarized perfectly. Thanks.

Not sure if I can prevent flags on past replies. I have noting more to say regarding this matter. I think we have arrived to the best possible workaround to this issue and I have tagged the topic as solved.
