I have just finished writing a book entitled: “21st Century Modeling: The Fusion of 3D CAD, 3D Printing & Traditional Modeling Skills”. The book is steered specifically to those wanting to use 3D printing to make custom designed scale models. The focus is different than the standard 3D printing fare that focused on more art related topics without the stringent characteristics of building models to scale where parts must fit to others. It features SketchUp exclusively and was a challenge for me to describe specific SU processes in print without the use of video.
I would like to have a few folks from the SU community, especially those who’ve followed my work, to review the book and give me feedback. I’m not looking for editing. I’m looking more to general reactions and does it inform sufficiently to get someone started on the journey.
The book is 168 pages plus a glossary and is over 300mb. It will transmit via Google Drive and WhatsApp.
The book explores 3D printing technology, LCD printers specifically, The printing system, slicing files, the "science of supports, 3D CAD (SketchUp), Key essentials in CAD to ensure printability, basic SU functions that are most helpful in designing for printing, case histories of integrating all the skills, and troubleshooting print failures.
As with my other projects I had a steep learning curve with this one, being the first writing project using a book template in Apple Pages, and doing the final layout in Pages layout mode. I also learned that Apple Photo Preview let’s you drop out backgrounds with a touch of a button.
If you’re interested in getting a preview look, please let me know on this thread and I’ll make arrangements to transmit a copy (PDF)
This is a notional cover design. It needs more work!
I am interested in reading your book, mostly because there is a moderate possibility of a very elaborate 3D printing project in my extended future (multiple years). I have followed your 16 inch and 5 inch battleship gun projects with great interest. I was an avid model maker (kits and scratch-built) 50 years ago in my teens, so it has been enjoyable to follow along with your integration of 3D digital design, 3D printing, and traditional model making techniques.
I do not know how long it might take me to read through all 168 pages and provide useful non-editorial comments, but I am offering to take a shot (get the pun?) at it.
The subjects of your book appear to fit exactly with my operations, and I would be intrigued to have a read and see how others approach the specific challenges.

Hello
I have just read your post about your new book and would be happy to read it and share any feedback with you
My working life has been in the architecture field as a Draftsperson and a builder of architectural scale models
As i am now retired I have some time available for this
Regards

I would very much like to review your book. I spend a great deal of time doing the things mentioned in your post. I am especially interested in your approaches to LCD resin printing and how it relates to SketchUp.
Thank you…
Myles
Regarding your aspirations for the book I think you’ve nailed it.
It would be essential for anyone wanting to take up 3D printing.
I was most impressed with your presentation of modelling using sketchup.
Illustrations throughout are excellent.
Regards,
Trevor
Thanks Trevor. That makes the effort worthwhile. DaveR had some technical corrections/enhancements that I will add. Of all the SU gurus, he’s the fellow that I follow religiously.
If you have any other comments/suggestions, I am open to them.
Goodday Myles
Having thought myself becoming too old and becoming too sketchy at how our 21st century future is changing too fast, I wish to admire the thoughts, actions and merits of SU, and all the other 3D software, you will be putting together and soon publishing.
Please post or note in your publication, your design 3Djourney, what keeps you motivated, excited and active at your age, as a lesson, and perspective for the rest us other too old sketchy modellers.
Having not been very active since SU2017, I believe that we are also being overwhelmed by new novel AI 3D design adventures?
Cheers & Thanks
Irv
I am currently looking for a 3D printer, that will let me realise my SketchUp models as scaled down 3d replicas.
As I have just retired I have plenty of time on my hands to review and provide feedback on "21st Century Modeling: The Fusion of 3D CAD, 3D Printing & Traditional Modeling Skills”
