I need a staircase where a person could climb the stairs carrying, say a box, 3’-4’ in height safely

Incorporating a midpoint landing, or even two, will be good for this as it allows for a dropping point halfway up the flight.

Splitting the difference between a spiral and a straight run staircase puts you in the realm of a set of winders.

Question there . . Why not make the 3 middle steps a landing where they can turn before going up more stairs much easier to do in real life . . ?

A landing would eliminate 2 risers. It’s really just a large tread. So, the risers would need to be someplace else.

And that could be an issue if space is limited, so sometimes winders are the best compromise.
