Cut not working?

I’m trying to cut this model into two sections via the plane I’ve intersected through it.

(I had a really nice series of images to show this off but now I see that new users can’t post more than one image…!!!)

I select the cutting plane. I choose “Intersect Faces > with Model”.

The cut works… mostly. But not on the top surface of my model! The top surface doesn’t cut, and I get this weird diagonal line as I move my cutting plane:

Why isn’t my model cutting all the way through? Thanks.

yeah, you need a couple of messages first, usually if you introduce yourself in the intro thread, plus a couple here, it’s enough.

so, it’s not cutting per say. it’s just tracing the intersection of the plane and the thing you selected.

because neither your object nor your plane are grouped separately, they will still glue to each other. therefore moving the plane will distort the object.

If you plan on using this method (intersect), first group your plane, then place it where you need. then, 3 clicks on the object, intersect with model. it will mark the intersection with the plane, but the plane will remain in its group so it won’t glue to the model.

this tells me you might not have selected your whole model. if you miss some faces, they wont be marked.

Second method, because I accidentally sent my message, if your object is a clean solid, you could also use solid tools.

Both the object and the cutting block are solid groups (you can use Solid inspector to help)

you can use the last one (divide?) to cut your object in two parts.

And you know what, in for a double post, in for a triple post.

Free plugin called Zorro 2.

group your object, inside the group, place a section cut. right click on it and pick “slice model at section”

it’ll delete the hidden things. if you do it twice, one section plan in each direction, you get your 2 pieces.
Beware, you won’t have endfaces where the cut happens.
(I use that when I need to slice a complex model that isn’t solid, or can’t be, or I can’t be bothered to make solid.)

Thank you for all your help! Your first solution did the trick: it was simply that I forgot to Group the plane as its own Group. Doing so fixed it. (The hexagon shape needed to be Grouped, too. And it had been, but I ungrouped it in desperation, trying to find something that would work.)
