The top and the bottom of a box are slightly different. I can create one and make it a component, (Top). I can even give the copy a different name (Bottom). But editing one component also makes the same change on the other.
How can I edit one or both without affecting the other?

Right click on one and select Make Unique.

You can select more than one and make them unique, then that selection will be linked, without disturbing the original or originals.
So if you had 8 components you could select four and make unique giving you two sets of four.
