Here’s another aspect of UpFront output that I forgot about: Adobe Illustrator (i.e. vectored graphic)
Vectored output from SketchUp is just the lines while all the colors are raster. This produced filled polygons 3d->2d.
You can get filled polygons from LayOut, though not for shadow volumes.
I love the vector shadows. From the applications I know, only Archicad can output them today. It can also replace textures with vector hatching in vectorial views. It has its own (slowish) software render system for these views (OpenGL obviously doesn’t support them)
Upfront and Ashlar-Vellum were the softwares I played around a bit with as I was coming out of school. Then formZ in grad school for my ‘paperless studio’ block.
I drew the timber frame porch addition for my parent’s house using Adobe Illustrator. I also did several schematic (2d) proposals for customers using illustrator, then I moved into AutoCAD for production where I worked and eventually SketchUp when I went out on my own.
