Thanks again for the help to understand layers and how to manage them correctly… I have my model corrected and everything flows much better.
My layer’s list is growing ever longer.
May I ask, Is there a option to have the layers list highlight the layer clicked on?
example, Entity info box immediately updates to the clicked on layer. I use it to know what layer a group is on… Sometimes i need to tick the visibility box for many layers, anyway to have the layers list highlight to more easily find the layer i need to uncheck?
Or, in the model itself, any plug-in that would add “visibility” to the context menu so i could easily make invisible any layer in my way?
It sounds to me as if you still don’t really undserstand layers in SketchUp.
Layers are to be given to objects (components and groups) and all geometry should have Layer 0 applied to it. Layer 0 should be active at all times. When you select an entity in the model space Entity Info will show the layer given to it. To give a layer to a component or group, select the object and then select the desired layer in the Entity Info window’s Layers dropdown.
If you want to know what layer you’ve given to a group or component select it and look at Entity Info. No need to look through the list of LAyers in the Layers panel.
You can also use Color by Layer to easily identify which objects in the model space have been given which layers.
I get how they work now and everything is drawn on 0 and my groups/components are assigned a layer.
If i have 30+ layers, it would be sweet if i click on the group in the model and the highlighted bar would easily jump to the layer in the list for easily making is invisible. The entity info box updates in real time for any item selected in the model.
I looked to assign a hotkey to visible and none exist.
There isn’t a native setting for that. One of the Ruby gurus might be able to suggest whether or not it’s possible to hightlight the layer in the Layers panel.
What are you modeling that requires so many layers? Why are you still using SketchUp 8?
I don’t think it is possible. I could find no way to identify or set which layer/tag is selected. The Ruby API generally doesn’t provide hooks into the GUI panels.
I bought sketchup 8 forever ago and do not use this often,
I am modeling an Off Road camper, We are attempting to make a camper that is under 7’ tall, under 2000 pounds, 2 queen beds and a stand up bathroom and a sales price under 20k.
Every change affects a myriad of other little things.
I guess i have 30 layers??? something as simple as the wall framing has multiple layers so i can have interior, exterior, floor, roof, rear etc.
I would upgrade to the latest SU that was not a subscription…
If this was a daily profession i would not paying monthly but after this I might not touch SU for a year or so.
