Arc "Face" Loses Area and gets oddly sectioned when moving an edge

Hello all -

I’m a Free Tier user that’s having something wonky occur as I try to alter some fundamental shapes with the Move tool. Please see the following steps and resulting behavior:

Step 1. Here’s the shape before attempting the move command. It’s a quarter circle arc that I “pulled” up 10’, resulting in what’s shown here, exactly as expected (a contiguous top face).

Step 2. I then select the Move Tool and the Front edge of the arc, and as soon as I tap the Up Arrow to constrain the Move vector, the top face gets sectioned off (as shown here highlighted in red):

Step 3. I complete the Move on the Blue Axis (2’ up) and you can see the resulting reduction in the top face geometry?

Hoping someone can direct me as to what I’m doing wrong as this is messing up my ability to create a 3D render of my design? Any end-arounds welcome as well, and thanks in advance for looking!

Basically you have to tell sketchup how you want to beak up the face, it has to be segmented in some way as there are no real curves in sketchup.
So this is one way to tackle it, a simple radial array of edges, from endpoint to endpoint, that can be smoothed at the end, ctrl with eraser.

Brilliant!
Thank you, @Box
You’re explanation also helps.

As an entity, the arc already had “sections”, so it should know this.

Yes it does but the face between doesn’t so it ‘breaks’ at a straight line between two points.

If there are a lot of segments, you can have a look at the extension SplitTools to automate this task.
