What formats are available for import on free web version

Hi All,

I’m unable to find any format that the free web version will import. Is there a list somewhere of file types that can be imported for free? I’m trying to import a vector PDF ideally but have some flexibility to convert or work around limitations if I know a format that is supported.

Thanks,

David

Go to the Import panel. It will show you what formats you can import. Vector PDF is not an option nor are CAD file types like .dxf or .dwg. This shows the file types that can be imported with the paid web version.

For free hobbyist usethe options, especially 3D options are limited.

It tells me the file formats I can get when I upgrade, no mention of what is possible without upgrading. Here is the text I see:

Upgrade to import the following file types:

3D: 3DS, DAE, DEM, DWG, DXF, KMZ, STL, SKP
2D: DWG, DXF, PNG, JPG

Click on the My Device button in the panel and see what options are available.

What is it you are working on?

When I click on “My Device” it takes me to a file browser window which shows the files on my desktop (by default, full filesystem browsing available). Still no mention of supported types, just the text I pasted above showing types available after upgrade.

I’m trying to import a PDF of a site layout that has a scale on it I can use to resize once I get it imported.

Thank you for the super fast replies!

David

PDF import isn’t available in the free version or the paid web version. It’s available in the SketchUp 2026 for desktop, though.

It sounds like you need a paid subscription based on your use anyway.

BTW, I wasn’t asking about what kind of computer you are working on.

I just tried a JPG and it imports. I lost the vectors but good enough to play with. Thanks for the help.

You can try importing a .jpg file to test.

If this is for any sort of commercial use you would need a paid subscription to avoid violating the Terms of Use. You could go with the paid web version to start and then definitely you’d be able to import raster images to use as a reference for tracing. If your PDF contains vector line work there are applications like Inkscape that can create .dxf files from vector PDF. You could then import the .dxf file.

Yep JPG imported despite the text implying it would require upgrade. Worked fine just confusing information. This is not for commercial use, it’s for my own personal project. Appreciate the help!
