Random Tools extension - unexpected behavior (object scaling)

Using the Random Tools extension, which has a very convenient “Place Components Randomly On Edges” function. Great. I need to put some rocks on the edges of a driveway.

OK, let’s select a component and an ungrouped face, like it asks:

The result:

WHY is it (1) rescaling them like that, and (2) WTF happened to the texture???

Am I doing something wrong, or it’s not working as expected?

Is there another method of placing a bunch of components on an edge, either randomly mixing them up, or even in sequence? (I can randomize them later with Randomly Swap Positions)

Skatter costs $ 120 and also doesn’t work as expected…

Have you contacted the author of the extension?

Random Tools extension most likely work as intended. Basic knowledge of SketchUp and the extension is necessary to be learned and understood, to know what to expect from it and how to use it. Or troubleshoot if ‘problems’ arise.

In this case, among the basic things to know are:

  • Arc is created from segments/edges
  • Component Scale - Reset Scale/Scale Definition
  • Applying of material on faces vs. on container (group, component)

- unknown scaling
  • material disappearance

You can control to some extent the number and position of the components by changing the number of segments of the Arc. Or by using ‘Place Components Randomly on Vertices’, instead of ‘Place Components Randomly on Edges’.

What error did Skatter give?
