You can edit the current style to change the color of the back face for the default material. If you do so in a blank new model and save it as your template, you will get that for all other new models you create using that template (I use a garish green).

When you pushpull a face that is inset on another, SketchUp by default assumes you want to create an opening in that face, so it deletes the starting face. To override this default, press ctrl (alt on Mac).

Wow, thanks for all the super advise and really quick responses !! Seems to be printing well on my little cube :slight_smile: looking at all the support structure I probably should have turned it up upon its back to lessen the amount I have to clean up… Oh well, minor issue. About 1/2 printed…
