Simon, I’ve never really experienced any issues moving/aligning things in LayOut until this most recent update. Between this and the lack of a preview in the viewport when moving objects, I’m dissatisfied with the current version. It’s not as fluid or intuitive.
For me, I’m not too affected by the lack of a preview and my workflow is actually better because moving, snapping and transforming is faster.
What you are trying to do in the example gives me no issues.
I’m on latest Windows
Paul, I’m having 100% the opposite response to the current version! How can you move an object that you can’t see??!
Snapping to move, now requires you to go to the centre of the object and choose the inference point in which to snap to - this is an added step. It’s slowing the process down.
Colin has already agreed that I have raised some valid points, so hopefully there will be refinements.
I’ve found the click on a point trick is very temperamental when clicking on a model. Ok for layout lifework. But I think there are some positives with the new functionality. Laying out “viewports” for example is much more fluid.
It seems to me that if a software performs an operation repeatedly with the same results, the operation is a function of the software. If a new version of the software is released, and the software fails to perform the operation repeatedly, or not at all, then the code has been changed, and is no longer a viable function. Since Neets1604 was able to perform the operation repeatedly to the extend that it became part of her workflow, but can no longer, the function may have been removed with or without the developers insight. I would think that this alteration would have been caught during the beta test.
In 2016, SketchUp announced that LayOut would start being developed for extensions, just like SketchUp, but when inquired during the 2018 convention, the response was not favorable. Perhaps SketchUp should revisit their extension consideration.
The sole purpose of a software is to meet the needs of its users. The goal of its revisions is to meet the demands of its users. A lesson AutoDesk never learned
Draco, I would have thought that SketchUp, during testing, would have been very aware that aligning viewports using inference points wasn’t as fluid or intuitive as the previous version. It’s also disappointing that the preview has been removed from the viewport when moving it. This is probably in an effort to make LayOut quicker, but to be honest I’m finding that it has a more obvious delay now. I don’t see the benefits of this new function at all. I’m still very disappointed with these revisions to LayOut - which is frustrating because on the one hand they (SketchUp) did great by introducing the line weight function but on the other, they have taken a slight backward step (in my opinion) by compromising other aspects of efficient workflows in LayOut.
Hi all, just to throw my 2 cents in ![]()
To be honest I have to agree with Neets1604. I use SketchUp & LayOut constantly for work, and this recent change had made it much more difficult to quickly put LayOut documents together for us.
I’m fortunate in the sense that the size of the SketchUp & LayOut files we use are relatively small, and so the previous method of real-time rendering as you move the viewport in LayOut never posed a problem. Whilst I’m able to use the inferencing you’ve both kindly gone into above, others in the office aren’t quite as savvy when using the two programs & it’s slowing us down. I would agree that this is a backward step - for us at least.
Would it perhaps be possible to have an option to toggle between these two methods when moving the viewports, so that the optimal approach could be used whether you’re working on a large model or a smaller one? Hopefully this can be considered, as we’d like to be able to make changes on LayOut as quickly & easily as we used to!
If you could please kindly let me know on this forum / drop me an email to thomas@workjunction.co.uk if there are any changes made that’d be very much appreciated ![]()
Thanks a lot!
Hey there!
Thanks for your input! I think your idea of having the option to choose between these two settings is a good suggestion and hopefully SketchUp will consider this when undertaking further testing/upgrades.
