Yes but those groups and components consist of edges. The edges needs to be selected first in order to create the groups.
I want to be able to hide and show everything on my model. So everything needs to be grouped in that case.

Basic explanation:
And this on visibility.
That’s a fundamental part of the way SketchUp works.
I do the group first, tag second but it’s possible to just draw as little as 2 lines, then group.
Then assign a tag.
Now you have a tagged group while everything inside is untagged raw geometry.
Just edit the group from there on out and everything is tagged per the group tag.
The second advantage is that this allows you ease of editing, moving, etc without disturbing anything else in the model. You can jump from group to group to work on the model.
Entities can be easily moved from one group to another using the CUT, PASTE IN PLACE method or using Outliner.
Make groups of various parts as you see fit to allow for the greatest flexibility.
Unlike other CAD programs, everything in SU is inherently sticky and all geometry interacts. Turning off visibility for an edge or surface that has been assigned a tag makes it not visible, but does NOT isolate that geometry. It is still in its position (invisible) and can be cut, moved and interacted with by fresh geometry, often with disastrous consequences. Complex models with hidden geometry commonly become jumbled messes due to visible and invisible geometry interacting. This is the danger others are warning against. Only groups and components isolate geometry from interaction.
That. And also the likelihood of confusing visibility issues when you eventually do create groups and components. There’s nothing that forces all the geometry you gather in a group or component to have the same tag, nor to have the same tag as the group (which would be redundant in any case).
