Dimensions styles (SketchUp)

Hey all,

It might be nice to have more than 1 dimensions style, for example a larger one for overview and a smaller one for detailed work. It can be done of course, by changing the defaults, might be nicer to have a better arrangement though.

This is quite low priority, but might be worth considering.

Thanks, Chris

Is this for dimensions in SketchUp or in LayOut? In LayOut every dimension can have a different style if you want.

BTW, are you still using SketchUp 2021 as your profile shows?

Also in LO, you can create a scrapbook with all the dimension styles you need. From there you can drag and drop the ones you want into your LO file and apply it as needed.

Sorry, Sketchup - though that’s handy to know about Layout. Do you think dims are best in layout if layout is used, or SU?

Need to update my profile, Am a Pro user, so latest SU (Currently using 24.0.553 64-bit)

Nice, thank you for the headsup :+1:

I think Dimensions are better done in LayOut. They look better and you have many more options for their appearance and what they contain.

Thanks for updating your profile.

Thank you Dave, I’ll take that approach, today I found it awkward to do dims in model when using LO - only decided to use LO after it had been set up, so had to make the best of it. I’ll definitely do dims in LO for the next project. :+1:

Good to see you’re still on here btw

Here are a few examples of dimensions in LayOut.

If symbols for diameters, tolerances, and the parentheses are added in SketchUp you’ll wind up with disconnected dimensions. All of these dimensions are still linked to their models meaning they’ll update if the model gets edited. Leaders are automatic when the text is too large to fit between the extension lines. You can also edit things like the gaps between extension lines and the anchor points and you can choose from a wider range of arrowheads and dimension line styles. If needed you can not only change the style of different dimension s but they can have different units. Lots more you can do with them, too.

You can dimension across viewports if you need to break the view. You can’t do that in SketchUp.

That is way better than I would have expected, thank you for sharing your examples and mentioning its flexibility.

I will definitely be trying it in LO again with the next project, in addition I’m finding LO vastly more stable and performant now than it was about a year ago.

You’re quite welcome. I’m glad if that helped.

If you dig into LO a bit I think you’ll find there a huge range of things you can do that will first simplify your work in SketchUp and make the whole process of getting the documents out easier. Good luck with it.

It certainly did help.

Yes I’ll certainly look into LO further, thank you very much for your time and have a good evening, with a drink on me :+1:

You don’t have to ‘drag and drop’, hoovering over a style/setting in the scrapbook (and clicking) is enough to set the wanted style and settings…

Definitely better done in LO.

short story long, dimensions in sketchup are great when you need to have dimensions visible as you work. you know, the “awww ■■■■, how long is it again?” moment.
it’s like making a quick sketch. or writing with a pencil on the thing you’re working on.

layout’s dimensions are made with publication in mind. they’re not just for you but for all the people that will interact with your documents.
(they are prettier)

Absolutely :+1:

The problem came up with a recent project, I had to check the dims before publication, so I had them in the SU model. As I’d already done them, I decided to re-use them in LO and while it did work out OK ish, I would have preferred to do dims in LO, especially after @DaveR 's suggestions and advice.

I’m glad I found this thread and learned about the Scrapbook .Does anyone know if i can send just the scrap book to another user ? we work in same company

A scrapbook is just a LayOut file. Open it via the Edit button in the Scrapbook panel and use Save as to save it to your Desktop. From there email it or upload it to a network location or file sharing service for them. They’ll open it and use Save as Scrapbook.

Hi, you can go to menu Edit > Preferences > Folders, then add the path of the folder contains your “templates” and “scrapbooks” layout file. Then all layout files in that folder will appear as scrapbooks like default scrapbooks as well as “Templates” when opening a new file.

Use this way, you can control all “templates” and “scrapbooks” layout files for every computers in you company/team without save as scrapbooks one by one.

thanks
