Can't lock in rotation direction

I’m used to being able to lock in a rotation direction, but it’s not working for me in the attached file (rotate.skp)

rotate.skp (344.1 KB)

As shown in the screen recording, I have a small triangle that I’m using to lock in the rotation direction that I want. It works find for a simple line,

But what I want to rotate in that direction is a group containing a spindle (that also has a line in it). I orient the rotation tool by my little triangle and click the down arrow or hold down the shift key to lock in that rotation direction. But then as I move to the origin, to rotation tool reorients with the blue axis.

What can I do to lock in that rotation direction for this group?

lockProblem

I found a solution posted by @box here – very clever

It loses the lock when you move the mouse over the pivot point (in the Web version), but if you press the down arrow twice it regains it and works as expected. In the desktop version it works correctly.

@mihai.s came up with an actual solution to my problem – both it and the click drag orientation method work around I mentioned above are good to know
