When using the copy/paste in place command, the selected object being copied disappears during transition from origin of copy to new placement if during sequence the object being copied is out of view of window (because you either zoom, orbit or pan to get to your new paste location). The copy object is copied and pasted into position if you keep the object being copied visible on screen at all times.
