@Spirou4D I sent you a private message.
Ok as always with you ! Thanks a lot and congratulations, a very usefull extension.
I’ve read the entire thread, my personal opinion. It looks fine and the interface is enjoyable, but I can’t find a useful case, the models are not made in a way that a cut list tool could understand, so it doesn’t work for making cabinets to be built in real life, to get materials and estimate costs. For rendering it doesn’t make sense for me unless you can do what I’m going to suggest. Rendering assets must be as light as they can be cause you don’t want an oven showing a turkey inside of it with millions of polygons adding 30mb to the file but you really want that level of detail shown on a kitchen render, there’s a trick that many engines use that is called proxys, vray is one the engines that I use and it has a big library of assets that are proxys. Proxys are models with a very low polygon count but when you render them it shows a very detailed model with tiny details that improve a lot the quality of the final product, I don’t know well how it works cause my programming knowledge is close to zero, but if you can make your models look low poly on the model and high poly on the render you’ll have a great plugin. V-Ray has a tool to make convert high poly models into low poly proxys, it can also import proxys that you have created previously.
If you’re making assets to render with a program that doesn’t work inside of sketchup like Twinmotion or D5, I don’t find it useful, TM and D5 have huge libraries of assets that will save you a lot of time cause you don’t have to add maps to materials or edit the textures of your asset to make it look more realistic, when I know that I’m going to use Twinmotion I just leave my SketchUp model empty, even without textures, I use all the textures and assets from TM, it’s a lot faster and looks better so I don’t see a big market for that.
It’s just my opinion if this tool works for your wife just as it is it’s fine, not everyone must have the same workflow, but if you mange to make assets compatible with V-Ray and enscape you’ll have a great product there.
Thanks for sharing your extension, As an architect I am mostly interested in getting the design intent clearly across to the fabricator rather than needing a detailed cut list breakdown or high level rendering quality model. Fabricators will produce their own shop drawings for confirmation and signoff by me.
For me an extension needs to be accurate on key dimensions, function of the items, specification of parts, in an efficient model ( to save both sketchup and the architect in processing time).
So below follows a list of observations that I will add progressively.
I am using SU2021 and installing v0.3.8 (build 49)
- Install, quick and easy. had to restart on install to load cabinet library, on a fresh start Library commenced install but failed to complete. (Ruby Console showed no error but library did not load, maybe an SU 2021 compatibility issue ?)
- I would normally show door swings on elevations? (Australia we show Latch < Hinge, whereas Vietnam etc show Latch > Hinge )
- Is there a way of adding Text Attributes to a cabinet,( eg product urls, specific instructions etc) with ability to output a text file.
- I would want to see internal shelves and use "View hidden edges to see them in elevations
- The model material displayed in preview screen is too dark and hides edge detail.
If I get it running will add some more observations
Same here. I just need a good design tool. I’ll let the cabinet guys figure out the fabrication, that’s literally NOT my job. I think it’s a great start.
@gsharp Hi, I can’t seem to send you a private message, so I’ll send it here. You can try this version out. I also added a new cabinet option with a door and drawer.
kitchen_cabinet_studio-0.4.0.rbz (867.0 KB)
Looking good. Needs a base corner cabinet (easy reach) and a blind corner cabinet.
Yeah, totally. I had some trouble making the corners last time, but this would really complete it.
Have you looked into Mozaik? You can get the manufacturing version. Yes, it’s $$ but depending on how often you need cabinets it’s a huge advantage. I design homes and cabinets at a cabinet shop. The program uses SU to build and generate cabinets and create models you can paste and copy into your home models. Or I can do it for you.
This looks interesting. I use Mozaik for all my cabinets but I’ll check this out and see if it’s easier for when I don’t need cut sheets or assembly sheets.
I’ll say you are on the right track here. Nice work. For me I would need more control over the cabinets but leaving you short of having to program your extension to the level of Mozaik. I’d need to adjust drawer heights so that a bank of drawers could have the same top line drawer height as a door & drawer cabinet. I would need an option for inches as well.
All in all I think it’s good work and an option for others, just not me at this point.
Thanks for sharing your extension. I’ll check it out later to see where it goes.
Thanks for pointing that out. It should work with all units.
I don’t see where I can change units at. Where is that option?
No, I’m talking about when you have a bank of 3 or more drawers, most frequently the top line drawers are the same size. We use 6-1/2" top line drawers when we have framed or raised panel drawers to there’s room in the middle for handles. We rarely make all drawers in a bank the same size. The 4 banks are generally bigger as they work down with the top line drawer at 6-1/2" we hold the top doors and drawer down 1/2" too for the granite reveal.
Try this version. It should work with all units.
I also added one blind cabinet and a resizer.
kitchen_cabinet_studio-0.5.2.rbz (918.0 KB)
How does the “resize” work?
Nevermind, I updated it ![]()
