Zooming out, getting lost, can't easily zoom back in

SO you have a model, zoom in with scroll button 2 or 3 clicks to look at something close and get lost in something - a space inside an extruded box - but clicking the scroll button to zoom back out 2 or 3 clicks does NOT get you back to where you were. Routinely, I have to hit the “zoom to extents” button to see where I am. Can we make the scroll button act both ways the same way?

the zoom, scroll wheel mode, will zoom in and out from the point you’re aiming at.

if my cursor is on the head, and I zoom in, the point where my cursor is will remain fixed on my screen, and everything will zoom around this point.
same when I zoom out

then if I move my cursor to the shoes, same thing.

however, if I start moving the cursor while zooming in and out, or if I don’t place it ON the thing I want to see but NEXT to it then yeah, the camera will be more chaotic.

because, again, in sketchup, the zoom in/out will follow your cursor.

if you take the zoom tool (z) it’ll zoom in and out around the center of your screen. that’s normal, since you’re moving your cursor to zoom in/out, it can’t focus on it.
I believe it’s the same on ipad / web with a trackpad when using the gestures.

this is a basic thing in all 3d softwares. some will have a “targeted” zoom like sketchup. you have to aim at the things you want to see.
some will have a “global” zoom where it’ll zoom in/out on the middle of your screen (twinmotion, just to name one. I often switch from one to the other, it’s really annoying)

I’ll add,

obviously, sketchup can do both, because it already does, depending on whether it’s wheel or zoom tool / touch.

I’d like a choice. like blender gives us

you can choose to zoom on mouse position (like sketchup) or zoom globally (like twinmotion).

and from the issue you’re describing, I think you would also benefit from the ability to switch

Don’t forget that you can create scenes to “remember” a pan, orbit and zoom set-up. A scene can “remember” more settings but these 3 are often the most important.

So, after carefully adjusting a global view, create a scene or update an existing one.

Then, do the same with a zoomed in view.

This allows you to switch quicly between the two views.

You can create as many of these views as you need.

I think you mean with this that 2 or 3 clicks reversed should bring you back out of the extruded box.
Sadly this is not possible, because of the fact that once inside the box, your cursor is now hovering over the back of the box and uses that distance to control scoll speed. (Like @ateliernab told you)
