Wooden bookshelf

Hi, I just need to design a very simple wooden bookshelf, just horizontal shelves hold by vertical piece of wood. I is there any “template” I can start from that (just change the dimensions) ? Thanks

Look on the 3dwarehouse?

Perhaps go through the basic educational materials available for SketchUp Web first though… modifying someone else’s work is sometimes more complicated than building your own, especially as a bookshelf will be mainly rectangles with thickness.

How are you going to use this bookshelf model once you have it? What is the purpose of modeling it? Is this an exercise to learn to use SketchUp? Are you eventually going to build the bookshelf? @bmike is right that modifying one from the 3D Warehouse might be more work than making your own.

Thanks for your answer. I don’t have time to go thru the trainings, tutorials. I tried to create one, with no success. If a model does exist, I’d like to play with the width, height, thickness as I need to create shelves for a total of 30 meters (with two lines of books per shelf) and fit in my office room. Xavier

OK, will try ! That’s true, my design is so simple…thanks. Xavier

Is this for a class?

So look in the 3D Warehouse and see what you find.

Make an effort to learn and a bookcase is just a few clicks.

Plus some kind of bracing if it is going to be freestanding. Or you must fix the verticals to the wall behind. I would get 25 cm or 30 cm glulam boards for the verticals and the shelves. Top and bottom shelves fixed and the rest on adjustable pins. I don’t know actually what a 3D model would help.

The IKEA version will simply use a 3mm mdf board nailed with panel pins to the back for bracing and two anti fallover angle brackets at the top.

To be honest, if you don’t have time to learn the very most basic functions of sketchup to build something so incredibly simple, I don’t know how you are going to operate the software to use a template or an existing model.

Will there be a -F-manual included?

Not even MDF anymore. Honeycomb panel with veneer on the sides and strategic thickened areas where the connectors pull together…

thanks !

Partially agree with you. I’m short of time as there is a huge discount on shelves that ends tomorrow, this a the main reason I want to skip the learning curve, which is not good, I agree. I tried to create a basis piece of wood, with no success at all…

I believed a template / existing model could be easy to parametrize.

I think I’ll give up and use my notebook and pencil.

thank you

Xavier

Learning any software under the gun is rarely the path to a good learning experience. As was stated it is a pretty simple model, but you do have to have get down the basics in order to create even a simple model. Given your tight deadline, doing it with pencil and paper makes the most sense… but hopefully you will come back and dedicate a little bit of time to learn the basics and use SketchUp on the next project!
