Something wacky is going on with my computer (Windows 11 - up to date) where it boots up just fine…then after a minute or two freezes…then restarts itself. Once it restarts it seems to work fine, but this is obviously not a good thing and a sign of a larger problem.
I’ve tried all the tricks I know without success to fix this, so I am going to do a factory reset and restore the computer (in theory) to the state it was in when it left the factory.
So my question is before I do this, is there anything I need to do in regards to my SketchUp Pro subscription, free extensions, or paid extensions that I’ve downloaded to make sure I will still be able to use them after all the dust settles?
I’ve saved all my files to an external SSD and all that good stuff, and I have copies of my licenses backed up as well.
But is there anything else I should do, should not do, or otherwise be aware of before I start this process? Just to be clear, I will still be using the same physical machine.
And as a follow up, whenever I upgrade to a new computer, is there anything else to keep in mind regarding transferring subscriptions, licenses, or extensions?
I searched through the forums on this topic but didn’t find anything more recent than 2015-ish referencing Windows 10 and the time when SketchUp was not subscription based.
As long as you log back in with your account, everything should be exactly as you left it. You may need to re-download the extensions. As for your paid extensions, that should work the same way as your SketchUp account. If not, you may have to contact the developer of the extension directly and see if you can work something out.
I always take screen shots of SketchUp & Layout with the various trays open so that I can reproduce everything exactly as it was after the rebuild. I do the same for the Win11 Start Menu & Taskbar as well for the same reason.
The other thing to do is sign out of SketchUp before you reset your computer.
Best of luck - I hope it solves your problem and I think it probably will.
I do have some extensions that I have purchased and I have copies and backups of the licenses.
What do you mean by releasing the license?
It was my understanding the extensions are linked to my account, but the license files must also be present on my computer when I install the extension.
What would happen if I do not release the license before reinstalling my operating system or move to new device in the future?
Usually, there is a limit to the number of activations. Find the extensions in either the tool drop-down or the extension drop-down. Hover with the mouse over the name, If it has a license, it will be shown. Select license, this will give you a place to release it.
Another non-SketchUp related issue is that if you have website logins and passwords saved on your web-browser you’ll lose those in the new system - you can export your browser’s prefs and reuse those in the new set up.
You just need to make a list of ‘customisations’ before the jump…
This applies to any other software or system settings you’ve been using - e.g. somethings as simple as your desktop image etc…
