When using freehand draw in an arc it whites out everything in its path

Not sure if the title makes sense. When trying to draw a dotted curved line with the freehand tool, everything in the curve path gets erased, and it creates white space in its place. This is extremely annoying if this is the default behavior. How can I fix this?

Or, is there another tool to show the connection between light switches and the lights they turn on?

I just figured it out, you have to turn off “fill” in “shape style”.
