I don’t understand what just happened - I put the rectangle tool on a corner, but it treats it like the center? How do I stop it from doing that? Other than saving my model and closing it down and restarting it, which is how I got out of it.

Try tapping the Ctrl key.
It should toggle between center and corner.

That’s a new option in v2018.
That stuff is distracting - I want to draw a line and several colored lines going off at different angles appear - I have no idea what they do. I dunno - maybe I should remove this version and go back to the earlier version?

You are probably seeing dotted coloured lines that indicate inferences to possible points, faces, or edges which you might want to use to constrain the start or end of what you are drawing.
