Hello My name is Daylon. I am looking for an expert to help me create a plugin or code or maybe even just something in profile builder 4 to help me build deck stairs more efficiently. I am a builder and I use sketchup to design decks and help me get my materials lists made. I feel like there would be a way to create a system where I can basically drag my mouse from one point to another, and it would automatically build my stairs the way that I always build my stairs. Such that after I have built them once ( setting parameters for my stringers, blocking, overhangs, fascia’s, etc.) it would automatically build that out, saving me hundreds of hours, because I just always have to start from scratch but I have a suspicion that I am wasting time. I don’t want a generic stair building plugin because all they do is provide the look of stairs for the model. I am specifically wanting the steps to be built using my own building method, and include all the components of my steps so that i can get a materials list built rapidly and repeatably. I thank anybody in advance for pointing me in the right direction!
I’m Jenn and I’m an intermediate user in Canada. Joined for help when I can’t figure it out!
I’m Thomas and I’ve been using SketchUp off and on since 2005. Mostly during architecture school in the 2000s and more recently as a millwork engineer / builder in the 2020s.
Hi all, greetings from my remote mountain cottage in Iceland.
I’m not new to Sketchup and still mourn the old days when it was free and provided a desktop version and a modelbank for all.
My proficiency level is somewhere above basic and up to passable. I took a course once and have tried to build on that but expect to be firmly in the amateur class.
My computer is dell xps13, windows 11 and the sketchup version is Student/educational.
To begin with, the plan is to draw up my house in order to find efficient ways to make changes to it. Might someday upload my project.
I look forward to join the community and my apologies in advance for any silly questions I might ask.
Hi, Georges here in Sydney, Oz. I’m an architect, been using Thea for a few years now. I do residential and commercial work; looking forward to talking as I’ve got a Thea problem

Hello Everyone,
Who, What Where and Why Questions:
My name is David. I am a beginner using SketchUp and I want to use it to design furniture. Woodworking is my hobby, and I believe SketchUp will be helpful in developing plans for projects.
Proficiency with SketchUp:
I have been working with SketchUp for about two months. Learning it by watching YouTube videos and trying to duplicate what the video instructors do. I am developing a sense for the structure of SketchUp and how to use some of the tools. I have an appreciation for the power of SketchUp in 3D modeling and the intricacies of using tools to get a desired result. I need to learn strategies for using tools to model woodworking projects.
My biggest frustration with video learning has been getting different results when following the sequence of steps in using tools as described in video lessons. Sometimes I don’t follow the steps correctly; sometimes the version of SketchUp used in the video differs from mine and I can’t follow the steps correctly, and sometimes I just can’t figure out what is going wrong!
Current Setup:
I work on a PC using Windows 11 with Sketch Pro. I started with SketchUp Go but decided to upgrade.
3D BaseCamp, 3D Warehouse and extensions:
I have not gone to 3DBasecamp nor extensions or websites. I haven’t even investigated them yet. I don’t plan on setting up a website.
What else I would like to say:
This is my first time joining an online community. I am hoping to get help in learning SketchUp and getting help when I get stuck. Perhaps someday I will be in a position to help people learning about SketchUp.
My name is Dave. I’m in Central NY. I aspire to do custom built-in mudrooms, walkin closets, workstations, mudrooms, shelving units, etc for customers.
I’m new to Sketch-up though I did tinker with it 15 + years ago.
My first question for the group is whether there is a good video tutorial for how to get started. Thanks!
Welcome. First start with learn.sketchup.com
Since you are planning to use SketchUp for your work for clients, the free web version would not be appropriate. You would need to be using at least SketchUp Go and probably really should use SketchUp for desktop (Pro or Studio). That would give you access to LayOut and a number of other useful features.
Howdy, my name is William. I’m a rookie with Sketch Up but have years of experiance drawing by hand, actual lead and rubber erasers! I jumped in with 2024 Pro and the Medeek project plug-ins. I use a Mac OS and so far I’m very happy with the results. This is an exercise in teaching an old dog a new trick… Nathaniel Wilkerson has been very helpful as I’m trying to get our first 2D / 3D home design to the engineer and hopefully I can find answers and direction on this forum and of course YouTube.
I have designed and built custom homes and cabinetry for 40 ish years.
Regards,
William
I am StudioJim. 45 years a commissioned artist in wood, metal and glass. Last 12 years a Head Distiller making whiskey etc. Now it’s time to start my art again. SketchUp is a tool I want to incorporate in my new work. Whatever that may be. 3 dimensional work. Sculpture etc. I am older than all you guys. I didn’t learn to type until I was 55. And that was many moons ago.
I have a Windows 10. SketchUp Pro. I know it’s adequate speed and memory.
So… I am starting at the beginning.
My first question is: where is the practice screen for Core Concepts… Please Help
thank you all… J
@jimbacigalupi there are a few good sources of information on getting started with SketchUp, The official SketchUp Campus is a good place to start:
If you have specific questions along the way the Forum is a great place to search for answers or ask your questions. Be sure to start a new thread with each new question to keep the Forum tidy. Welcome and have fun learning SketchUp
Good morning,
JLBuild here. I’m a new Sketchup user, Pro 2024 subscription. I’ve just started learning the program over the last couple of weeks, so very much a beginner.
I am a retired cabinet/furniture/boat builder, and former user of Vectorworks (not an expert by any means). I’m no longer in business, but currently doing a whole house full of millwork, including kitchen and bath, etc. I can’t justify the expense of VW and my old 2012 won’t work in new computers. I spent the previous 35 years as a commercial woodworker in NYC, running a shop for a GC biz on Great Jones St. in lower Manhattan, then my own shop in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, before retiring to the Chesapeake Bay region of Va. Currently spending a couple of days a week in the boatshop at the Deltaville Maritime Museum, and the rest working on home renovation.
I’m pretty happy with what SKP can do for me, and I’ve gone through several basic learning exercises, as well as Dave Richard’s Fine Wood Working intro tutorial. I’ve ventured into layout with my first little project and actually produced a set of drawings I can build from, though I’m just scratching the surface and learning every day.
I’m sure I can learn a lot from everyone here.
Thanks!
Edited to add- Mac M4 - Sequoia 15.1.1
Hi all
Im a furniture maker from Sunny Birmingham in England.
I started learning Sketchup 5 or 6 years ago to give my customers some basic 3d visuals of the proposed work.
I got a CNC machine a couple of years ago and that lead to me learning the cnc software (vcarve), so linking the 2 programs to work together is what ive been trying to do ever since.

Hello, I’m Kendall. I have never use Sketchup before and now I think it’s interesting. I would like to learn how to use it. I’m spending some time watching tutorials now, but I don’t think I’ve heard Sketchup 3DBasecamp, I will look for it later. Mine is SketchUp Pro 2020, I’m not sure if that’s the latest one. I have some ideas in my brain; however, I can’t illustrate them when I don’t know how to use SketchUp. I’m looking forward to discovering what I can learn from SketchUp or what it has aside from designing. Thank you for reading this. If you found this boring, then you’re right.
*Call me Mac.
- Industry and Profession is Retired.
- Use SketchUp for my personal use.
- I’m a beginner on the best of days.
- My goal has been to use SketchUp as a woodworking-project design tool I could access with a MAC and an IPAD at different times and different places.
- Been using the SketchUp GO plan for 2024 to mainly provide SketchUp for Web access on the MAC and SketchUp for IPAD access on the IPAD.
- For 2025, I am going to investigate the possibility of continuing on the SketchUp Free plan and using SketchUp for Web to access SketchUp with both my MAC and my iPad.
- Also, during 2025 I am hoping to spend some time working on a furniture design while sitting stream side fly fishing for trout in Colorado. Shouldn’t be any big deal - I’m already in Colorado!
Hi all,
I’ve been a semi-regular user in the past, but due to a serious medical issue, including a stroke, I haven’t been able to use the software for the last ten years. I’ve since moved to Thailand. I’m now ready to build my house here and have been refreshing my skills, but I realize I still have a long way to go. I need help downloading templates, specifically for things like toilets, power items. plumbing etc.
Thanks in advance, and happy new year.
