Welcome to our forums! Please introduce yourself :)

Thanks for letting me introduce myself and reading this;
Profession: Retired Sale Professional (recovering engineer)
Personal Use
Why SketchUp?:
A) I’m a woodworker. I make my plans with SU.
B) I recently install a pool; I was great to model the house, yard, pool placement, patio, walls, etc.
C) Designed my wood shop layout. Did the same for my brothers new shop, Tool placement, work flow, electrical, Vac duckwork, lighting.
D) Wood working projects. SU helps clients see how it will look in thier enviorment.
How proficient are you in SketchUp?`; Above intermediate but way below advanced (better than most I would guess).
Have you gone to a SketchUp 3DBasecamp?; No I live in NJ (they always seem to be on the West Coast)
What is your current set up?: [Computer type, Dell Laptop and Desktop XPS’, Good Graphics cards, SU 2023 Pro]

I love SU, I watch a bunch of Skill Builder videos. Love learning more about it.
I have used it for a very long time (way back when the free version allowed the user to “geo-locate”). I think that was pre- “Trimble” days.
I have made hundereds and hundereds of models with SU.

Favorate features: Referenceing, Push Pull, Copy, …
Area I need inprovement: (too numerous to mention but,) Textures, Layout

Features Requests:
A) Mix styles within the model. i.e. Different line weights in various components or groups, or XRay.
B) More power in the Dimensioning.
C) More tools aimed at Woodworkering.

Thanks
John Kgm/s^2 (aka Newton)

Hi I’m Peter Attwood, an ex mechanical design engineer - retired 15-years ago.
Served apprenticeship in motorcycle industry, then worked in specialist camera (aircraft & polaroid), TV lighting and camera mounting manufacturing design offices.
For the last 15-years of employment, I worked on CAD (Computervision & Unigraphics) solid modelling systems, including the use of finite element analysis & rapid prototyping processes.

I have been using SketchUp at home since before my retirement, mainly for hobby uses - woodworking, architectural & allotment planning, and currently run SU Make 2016 on a HP Pavilion desktop computer.

As well as making good use of the many video tutorials, I have found the ‘Dummies’ book very helpful in clarifying difficult, rarely encountered problem areas.

As well as modelling my complete bungalow and garden (very useful before carrying out any physical changes), I have been using SU to investigate various proposals for mounting solar panels on my bungalow roof and found the shading facility indispensable for assessing the expected performances.

I also use SU to produce graphics for use on various websites I manage, for myself and my wife.

And finally, I’m always prepared to use SU to investigate any ideas that members of my family have, as I’ve repeatedly told them that it’s better to model-up before cutting-out.

Hello, Alex here.

Production Designer in film/tv.

'Lucifer" on Netflix was my last show.

I am trying to find a way to contact the billing department of Trimble. There are no phone numbers anywhere I can see… any thoughts? I am trying for human contact, not AI interactions… I know, so last month…

Hi Alex,
No support numbers as far as I’m aware. Best method is the email route:

Neat. Totally binged that one!

I am a 77 year old retired tree inspector. I have been using SketchUp on my PC for several years mostly designing furniture and making floor plans. I have always been a PC user but I have acquired a Macbook to edit videos and an iPad Pro just because I thought it was cool. I downloaded SketchUp for iPad because I love the Apple Pencil, and look forward to learning how to use SketchUp on my iPad using the Apple Pencil…

Hi, all . My name is Thom. I am a licensed Architect in California. I have been using SketchUp to some degree for many years. ( I’m and old guy) Licensed in 1978.
I’m interested in learning how to use Layout for my construction documents. I have been using an old cad software (dos based) converting plans to dxf and importing to SketchUp for years. Easily making sketchup models , converting elevations back to dxf and exporting them to my cad system. I need whatever help and advise anyone has on using just sketchup and layout for the entire process . After maintaining and office for over 40 years I want to work from home or on the road.

Hallo allemaal,

Ik ben Martijn uit Nederland en wil voor mijn rijinstructie 3d theorie wegen maken.

Welcome. You can surely do that. What version of SketchUp are you using? Your profile says SketchUp Make 2023 which is not possible.

Hello:

I’m new to using a Forum and to SketchUp. I bought SketchUp Pro 2023 and right out of the gate am totally lost and spent hours on You Tube and trying to use the tutorials and find it not intuitive at all. I am recently retired from veterinary medicine and now do woodworking and blacksmithing so I really want to get this down. Can someone suggest the best way to start? The best on-line source of information or even that best book to buy. I’m don’t want to keep wasting HOURS of my time with nothing to show for it. Oh, I am using an iPad that I bought in January (iPad Pro) and I do own an older Mac notebook. Lastly, I have no idea how to answer my graphic question (where to find the information on my device). So I just typed in scribble.

Thank you for your time,

Jim

Hello all… no picture as I’m getting a little wary of identity theft, and AI is just getting started… oh well.

So, I started using SU many years ago, when it was free, and I was on a Windows machine. It’s always been for personal use, so that means sporadic usage, and never becoming an expert. But that’s the joy of SU, it can be used at any level. Mostly I’ve used it if I have a house I want to renovate or redecorate, and I want to see the results ahead of time. Today, for example, I’m working on a model of my condo apartment in Ontario. Ten years ago it was an old house in Nova Scotia.

I’m now fully Apple-based (my first computer was actually a Mac II, but my job required a PC, so I switched so I could use the same office tools suite at home). I’m using SU on a 12.9” iPad Pro, running SU for iPad of course, with the iPad mounted in a “sketch board pro”, and using mainly the “just draw” mode. I may also at times work on the model on my MacBook Pro with the web version, and get the benefit of a large external monitor.

What always attracted me to SU was how easy it was to get started and start doing useful work. To crib an advertising slogan from an obscure startup computer company, SU seemed like “the 3D drawing program for the rest of us”.

I’m 75 now, and wondering if at some point my control of a pencil might become a bit wonky, but so far, so good, and there’s always the mouse and keyboard to fall back on.

Hopefully in 2050 I’ll be using SU (singularity version, running in my brain) to design my habitat in space!

Hello Jim,

I am going to suggest that you look into online SketchUp courses by Daniel Toll to get familiar with the basics. Then once you feel comfortable with this most wonderful program, there are plenty of free online courses that you can join through the SketchUp website.
At least that is how I learned the program. And now I use it on every landscape design I create, and my clients love being able to see their landscapes in 3-D.

Lots of luck and above all never give up,

Ashton
