🚨 We need your feedback: SketchUp’s AI Assistant is here!

Gonna drive right past your snide anger management comment.

It’s really simple. At no point have I wanted AI in Sketchup. If I did, I’d have gone looking for it.

Imagine if you booted up SKP one morning and suddenly you’ve got enabled extensions you didn’t download, turn on, or even agree to in the first place.

The right way for them to do this would have been to have an email go out saying if you’re interested, it’s in the warehouse to download at any time!

If you don’t see the problem with softwares choosing to install AI without you agreeing to it, there’s no sense in talking further as we’ll never see eye to eye.

And no, I didn’t just come here to rant. I came here because I was trying to figure out why SKP doesn’t let me put my own textures into a permanent default library. In the process, I had the pop ups and since I was already here, I searched for it. But I made a post to show you I actually use the software, since you insinuated I don’t.

I like SKP. It’s a great alternative to Vectorworks, AutoCAD, and Fusion when I need to draw stuff that doesn’t have to be hyper exact. You can’t do woodworking down to the thousandth of an inch, so why would I draw it in something that wants that level or precision from the jump? I wouldn’t be in here to complain about the AI if I didn’t like and use the software. I’d be doing literally anything else.

Uninstalling the AI stuff is a great idea, until it reinstalls itself or won’t let me uninstall it at all. Like the AI Assistant that you can’t uninstall.

That’s my beef.

Fun fact. It’s always been the case. Sketchup comes with a bunch of pre installed extensions that will come back if uninstalled.

They can simply be turned off though.
Don’t want dynamic components ? Turn off. Geolocation ? Turn off. Ai assistant ? Turn off.

I’ve been using firefox for more than 20years, and now the new CEO wants ai in it. For now, all the things added I can manually turn off. There might come a moment when I’ll have to move to an ai-free fork of firefox.

Will I send a strong lettered email to the ceo inviting him to go eat a brick? Likely yes.
Will I go to firefox’s public forum express my anger there? What’s the point ?

And no, I didn’t insinuated you didn’t use sketchup.
I’m simply tired, like other users here, to see people create an account, call for help or rant (sometimes both), and disappear forever afterward.
I’m glad you’re making and showing stuff, it’s more than 99% of forum users.

The people on this forum have no power of decision when it come to implementing ai. We’re mostly a glorified free tech support desk where user throw their frustration and anger hoping some will splash on sketchup.
It mostly doesn’t.

I know how you feel, I never use dimensions in SU, but they are there, cluttering my workspace and I can’t turn them off… AI is coming to get your software (and hardware) however much you protest, you could always go off grid and draw lines in the sand. I for one, hope that once we get past the environmental issues & pointless processing, it becomes something positive we can all work with, much like Bill Gates achieved with the PC.

AI bankrupted a vending machine at the WSJ. Someone tell me the SketchUp AI can order me a fish or get me a PlayStation…

If you go back to read my comment you will see that I specified that the problem is that I DO keep uninstalling it and SketchUp keeps re-installing it and it keeps re-appearing. So no it’s not just like any other extension I’ve used in 10+ years of using SU, which is my entire point. Which makes your condescension pretty funny.

to be fair, this is a post made presumably by SU people who are literally asking us for our feedback. So it seemed to be a pretty appropriate place to ask them to make the AI act like all their other extensions. Maybe for you it stays off but for me it doesn’t.

The reason I am so annoyed by it is stemming from the fact that there’s an enormous disconnect between the general public and executives who are shareholder simps regarding AI. Plenty of polls and studies are showing consistently for years now that a majority of Americans don’t like it, don’t particularly find it useful, and don’t want to pay extra for it. We all know that executives have poured ungodly sums of money into AI despite a tepid public response and are sweating bullets trying to recoup a fraction of that investment.

Which is how we’re now here, with all the software companies going to pretty extreme levels to try and get us to use new AI features so they can go back and report strong user engagement to their bosses. In 10+ years of being a professional environmental designer and using SU, Chaos Vray, and Creative Suite daily, I have NEVER seen a feature treated like all this AI stuff. It’s not like every other feature and I don’t know why you keep saying that. They are making the buttons glowing, blinking, putting them in places that are usually where other buttons are, pop-ups that never go away every time I open the program, downloading extensions for me, it’s crazy. If it truly was treated like every other new feature I wouldn’t be so annoyed.

It’s particularly galling to me that this is from companies whose user base is the very people most affected by genAI. People calling it inevitable are just taking people like Dario and Sam at their word, and maybe it’s a futile fight to stand up and say hey actually I hate this. But I am not going to silently just sit here and not at least make my disapproval known in a forum literally asking for my opinion from a service that I have paid thousands for over the years.

Hi @dramsay
Have you heard that the NEW AI assistant is here?
I got at least three notifications about this when I opened the various SUs today. (I’ve attached screenshot of two of them.)
Could you tell me what you think is new about it?
Or is this still the same thing you advertised in your first post? If it’s the same, would you do to tell the marketing people that I can understand from ONE pop-up window, and I can remember back to more than a minute… so I want to unsubscribe from such ads. :winking_face_with_tongue: :innocent:

I found the assistant good for doing a very low resolution model that fit my purposes for distant views.

ORIGINAL

OUTPUT (MIRRORED)

It would be useful if sharp corners with axis adherence could be specified. This is a complex mesh with rounded corners that isn’t editable. Still- as I said it fit my purposes.

Hi @dezmo . Can clicking “Start modeling”? That should prevent this window from appearing again in the future. Let me know if that doesn’t work.

This is the 3rd time I’m reporting this ad, and the behavior what caused by click “Start modeling”.

(See above in this topic, also See this topic : Welcome window continues to show even when turned off in settings - #9 by PaulRussam )

So, no, it does not work.

I can’t say how many times I have had the AI (artificial idiot) message come back after I click start modeling.

As I understand it, this is what is happening:

  • You open SketchUp (version 2026.1)
  • The window appears, you click “Start modeling”
  • The window goes away
  • You close SketchUp
  • You open SketchUp, and the window is back
  • The cycle continues

Just want to make sure I have this right before I escalate to the appropriate team.

No.

  • I open SketchUp (version 2026.1)

  • The window appears, I click “Start modeling”: *The window goes away AND the “original” Welcome window appear where I need to select template, however I disabled in my settings to no need to open Welcome window

  • I close SketchUp

  • I open SketchUp version 2025 and the window is back

  • (SU 2024 does not work on my computer)

  • I open SketchUp version 2023 and the window is back

The above cycle come back time to time

AND 2025

I swear this AI pop up window is now causing SketchUp to crash on me. As soon as I click Start Modeling, half the time the program crashes.

Please for the love of god take this away.
