Gonna drive right past your snide anger management comment.
Itâs really simple. At no point have I wanted AI in Sketchup. If I did, Iâd have gone looking for it.
Imagine if you booted up SKP one morning and suddenly youâve got enabled extensions you didnât download, turn on, or even agree to in the first place.
The right way for them to do this would have been to have an email go out saying if youâre interested, itâs in the warehouse to download at any time!
If you donât see the problem with softwares choosing to install AI without you agreeing to it, thereâs no sense in talking further as weâll never see eye to eye.
I like SKP. Itâs a great alternative to Vectorworks, AutoCAD, and Fusion when I need to draw stuff that doesnât have to be hyper exact. You canât do woodworking down to the thousandth of an inch, so why would I draw it in something that wants that level or precision from the jump? I wouldnât be in here to complain about the AI if I didnât like and use the software. Iâd be doing literally anything else.
Uninstalling the AI stuff is a great idea, until it reinstalls itself or wonât let me uninstall it at all. Like the AI Assistant that you canât uninstall.
Fun fact. Itâs always been the case. Sketchup comes with a bunch of pre installed extensions that will come back if uninstalled.
They can simply be turned off though.
Donât want dynamic components ? Turn off. Geolocation ? Turn off. Ai assistant ? Turn off.
Iâve been using firefox for more than 20years, and now the new CEO wants ai in it. For now, all the things added I can manually turn off. There might come a moment when Iâll have to move to an ai-free fork of firefox.
Will I send a strong lettered email to the ceo inviting him to go eat a brick? Likely yes.
Will I go to firefoxâs public forum express my anger there? Whatâs the point ?

And no, I didnât insinuated you didnât use sketchup.
Iâm simply tired, like other users here, to see people create an account, call for help or rant (sometimes both), and disappear forever afterward.
Iâm glad youâre making and showing stuff, itâs more than 99% of forum users.

The people on this forum have no power of decision when it come to implementing ai. Weâre mostly a glorified free tech support desk where user throw their frustration and anger hoping some will splash on sketchup.
It mostly doesnât.
I know how you feel, I never use dimensions in SU, but they are there, cluttering my workspace and I canât turn them off⌠AI is coming to get your software (and hardware) however much you protest, you could always go off grid and draw lines in the sand. I for one, hope that once we get past the environmental issues & pointless processing, it becomes something positive we can all work with, much like Bill Gates achieved with the PC.
If you go back to read my comment you will see that I specified that the problem is that I DO keep uninstalling it and SketchUp keeps re-installing it and it keeps re-appearing. So no itâs not just like any other extension Iâve used in 10+ years of using SU, which is my entire point. Which makes your condescension pretty funny.
to be fair, this is a post made presumably by SU people who are literally asking us for our feedback. So it seemed to be a pretty appropriate place to ask them to make the AI act like all their other extensions. Maybe for you it stays off but for me it doesnât.
The reason I am so annoyed by it is stemming from the fact that thereâs an enormous disconnect between the general public and executives who are shareholder simps regarding AI. Plenty of polls and studies are showing consistently for years now that a majority of Americans donât like it, donât particularly find it useful, and donât want to pay extra for it. We all know that executives have poured ungodly sums of money into AI despite a tepid public response and are sweating bullets trying to recoup a fraction of that investment.
Which is how weâre now here, with all the software companies going to pretty extreme levels to try and get us to use new AI features so they can go back and report strong user engagement to their bosses. In 10+ years of being a professional environmental designer and using SU, Chaos Vray, and Creative Suite daily, I have NEVER seen a feature treated like all this AI stuff. Itâs not like every other feature and I donât know why you keep saying that. They are making the buttons glowing, blinking, putting them in places that are usually where other buttons are, pop-ups that never go away every time I open the program, downloading extensions for me, itâs crazy. If it truly was treated like every other new feature I wouldnât be so annoyed.
Itâs particularly galling to me that this is from companies whose user base is the very people most affected by genAI. People calling it inevitable are just taking people like Dario and Sam at their word, and maybe itâs a futile fight to stand up and say hey actually I hate this. But I am not going to silently just sit here and not at least make my disapproval known in a forum literally asking for my opinion from a service that I have paid thousands for over the years.
Hi @dramsay
Have you heard that the NEW AI ââassistant is here?
I got at least three notifications about this when I opened the various SUs today. (Iâve attached screenshot of two of them.)
Could you tell me what you think is new about it?
Or is this still the same thing you advertised in your first post? If itâs the same, would you do to tell the marketing people that I can understand from ONE pop-up window, and I can remember back to more than a minute⌠so I want to unsubscribe from such ads.
It would be useful if sharp corners with axis adherence could be specified. This is a complex mesh with rounded corners that isnât editable. Still- as I said it fit my purposes.
