Torus Grooves

You’re right, a simple “yes” or “no” could have answered the initial plugin existence question. However, I appreciate everyone’s efforts to suggest alternative methods. While I used a plugin for the basic torus shape, creating the grooves, whether closed loop or spiral, is beyond my SketchUp skills, and even AI assistance hasn’t been very helpful. I suspected there might be a straightforward approach I was missing, and hoped someone could point me in the right direction. Thanks again for all the suggestions!

I know it´s off topic right now, but i find it interesting this exercise, so y made a torus using just quads so it can be subdivided, here´s the result.

Excellent work. I’m particularly interested in the quad geometry. Could you please specify the plugins used to generate them? Additionally, I see they are closed loops. Would you be able to replicate this result for helix grooves?

This is well done. Since the grooves are closed loops, is it possible to adapt the same method to create helix grooves?

I’ve seen an older method for creating a helix along a torus, but I haven’t been able to achieve the same precision as your closed grooves. Perhaps your method could be adapted to create a similar helix?

well yeah.

you make one. then you copy it and flip it. the solid tools don’t really care what shape you’re using, so long as it’s a solid. so both helix can then be used to carve the doughnut

Of course I could, there´s almost nothing that can´t be done on Sketchup, but for that case I´d use another way, using Flowify making the cuts manually so they fit perfect with the helix mesh instead of just making the figures and letting the plugin to make the cuts wherever it wants. the way of modeling just a segment is also viable but also will take more time.

I’ve streamlined my Rodin coil torus creation by utilizing a helix plugin to generate precise spiral grooves along the torus’s outer surface. This allows for rapid creation of the intricate winding pattern. I then convert the helix into a small tube, ensuring all components are solid objects, and proceed to subtract these tubes from the main torus. However, despite confirming the solids, the subtraction operation fails to produce the desired carved grooves. I suspect an error in my workflow, and I’d be incredibly grateful if you could examine my file to pinpoint the issue and guide me towards a successful outcome. A good advice when dealing with intricate designs like that is to scale it up 1000x before complex operations.

Sketchup is not great at creating very small faces. Once it’s done, you can scale it back to its actual size

There’s an old extension that can make the extrusions. Next month will be 12 years since it was released.

I use it mostly for modeling coiled cords and multi-strand rope. Could be used for this torus, too.

Thank you, increasing the scale of the model did the trick. I then used the torus parameters plugin to limit the operation to one minute. By combining this with the helix-along-curve tool and carefully adjusting the number of sides to match the start and end points, I achieved the desired result without additional plugins. I’m exploring the possibility of creating a custom plugin that integrates these steps.
