Too Many Beach Balls

I recently purchased a new iMac 27" to replace my older one that went south. The new iMac is 3 GHz Intel Core i5 with 8GB of RAM, while the older one had 24GB.

The models I’ve been using on both units (SU Pro 2019) are fairly complex and are rendered in SU Podium 2.6.

I’ve noticed a markedly longer time of beachball action between commands. turning off shadows and some layers improves things, but I wonder if I need more RAM. Does the beachball lag come largely from too little RAM or too slow a processor?

I’d appreciate advice on the wisdom of installing more RAM, and if so, how much.

Thanks.

If the same SketchUp model performed acceptably on your old iMac while running Podium the same way, I would strongly suspect that you need more RAM. For a model of any complexity, especially while running a renderer at the same time, 8GB is pretty minimal these days. Unless the old one was a top-of-the-line CPU and the new one is bottom-of-the-line I would not expect the CPU to be the cause.

Thanks, Steve !!!
