Tire Tread

Fairly new to Sketchup and taking a class through Coursera. The program is dated and the instructor, I’m having a hard time understanding. I’m stumped on making a simple bicycle wheel tread. I am currently using the free online version of Sketchup. I welcome any and all suggestions for help.

How simple is it really? And what exactly does that simple pattern look like?

Did you manage to learn some of the basics of SketchUp?

I have the wheel created but the push pull part of the zigzag tread has me stumped. I’ve created it and deleted it 10 times. I think it’s the angle and getting the zigzags in a curve to make it look correct coming out of the tire.

When you ask for help and are asked what the pattern you want to create looks like, you can use Google and show a clear image, like this one

or if it’s a pattern of your own, you can show a hand sketch.

A lot of tutorials on YouTube about modeling a tire

If the tire is to look like one of the images @mihai.s posted, you would model one part of it and then array it with the Rotate tool to form a complete circle.

@mihai.s Video is a good one but utilizes extensions - which you don’t have access to in SU for Web. Are you modeling this as part of the course you’re taking? Or are you using the course to learn SU so that you can model this tire? The more information you provide us on your eventual outcome/goal the better we can help.

Do you need to model the treads as geometry? Or can you use an image texture. See example using texture:

Hi Eric,
The entire wheel, including the tire (rubber pattern), can be made with native tools only and it is.
The important idea is to draw that pattern in just one section, which then multiplies it by radial array, and this is done with Line, Arc, PushPull and Intersect Faces + Rotate.
For the rim/disc, in YT video, using FredoCorner for the bevel can be replaced with Follow Me, so it is not necessarily to use the extension.

But maybe your idea of using a texture instead of geometry is enough, maybe even better. But now, with all the new information, she can learn a little more about modeling in SketchUp.
