For three years I have had the flag of Ukraine as the background of my Avatar.
Tacit support from a ‘non combatant’ in the hope that something would be done.
Today I have changed my Avatar to a universal symbol of distress.
I lived and worked for many years in Germany and got to know and understand the people very well. I learned the language and culture from ‘the pillow’. Which tends to give you a softer more nuanced (and incredibly biased) understanding than if you learn it at the breast.
My point being, in all those years I often had discussions with generationally correct people about how it was possible that the things that happened happened?
How could an entire population let things happen…
There were many rational explanations, many political stories, lots of you had to be there…
and I sort of understood but never really grasped how it was that a large percentage of the general population actually agreed with this sort of insanity.
It seemed impossible.
I now understand how as it is happening again.
The average American needs to understand and react to the destruction of their democracy befor they have that ability taken away.
Incredibly, the elections here in Germany are also going in this direction again. What’s wrong with these people? Unbelievable, frightening, devastating, shameful, inhuman, self-destructive, …
I always have to think about what positive things could be created with all this energy, many of the world’s problems would surely have been solved by now. Strange times!
If only their energy was directed toward creativity rather than profiteering and destruction.
What a world we would have if billionaires shared their billions rather than amassed more billions.
I have to admit, managing to make macron look competent is a great feat from the pumpkin. when a guy willing to say anything and its opposite to steal an election manages to correct you on some facts, you know you’ve dropped quite low.
remember the era when millionaires would refurbish whole neighbourhoods and build libraries and school and such ? good times.
Unfortunately, history also tells us that concentrated wealth and power have been the norm of human civilization far more often than the alternative. I dislike being a pessimist, but that is the situation.
FYI, if any of you wishes to escape - or at this point visit anywhere that isn’t an authoritarian regime yet - better hurry.
it’s a rare feat to ■■■■ off both the UK and EU in such a short timeframe.
our women have rights, so do our lgbt+ people, and even our kids have some. more than guns do anyways.
also, healthcare, great food, funky accents and… have I mentioned great food ?
I’m curious what/if the democrats and non-voters think about last week’s events. And if / what they are planning to do to fight it. If this administration can carry on like this for four years…
