TIFF file crashes SU 2025

I have a TIFF file that crashes SU 2025 when I try to import it.

I have no problem importing this file in SU 2022.

The file is about 5.3 Megs in size.

I am on Mac OS Ventura 13.7.5 in French Canadian.

I can’t upload the file, the forum system doesn’t recognize it.

Put it in a zip file and upload that?

Here you go.

I did a test with the latest release of today and got the same problem.

A0-A870-CM2-212.TIFF.zip (4.3 MB)

It crashes SketchUp 2025 on my PC, too. I sent in the Bug Splat and referenced this thread.

Crash #109771

Maybe @colin can take a look.

Although the file is only 5.3 megabytes, it’s the same area as 50 x 4k monitors combined.

I’m checking if there is an upper limit for image size.

It will import if you’re on the classic graphics engine.

Colin, it works with the classix graphic engine.

I did a test by following these steps:

1 - Set the Graphic Engine to Old.

2 - Imported the TIFF file. No problem. The import is much faster than with SU 2022.

3 - Select the image then copy it.

4- Set the Graphic Engine to New.

5 - Started a new file.

6 - Pasted the image. No problem.

It looks like this is a workable solution.

I opened it in preview, and thought maybe the importer had a maximum dpi or size.
switching to a 300 dpi (won’t impact the image on screen) caused… preview to crash.

this is what I saw in preview. it took maybe a minute to unblur.

this is what I saw in affinity photo

a massive shift in quality, not just a SU problem.

I resized it to 20k px wide. crash. same at 17,5k
then 15kpx wide, no crash, clean import

new engine has a threshold ? a magical binary number that breaks the tiff import ?

I am not now at a computer with good image editing software, but I wonder if the bit depth of the image is something that the new graphics engine doesn’t support?

it’s an 8bit greyscale file.

tried converting it to a 8bit rgb but it also crashed.

Is there a need for it to be upscaled x4 already?

unlikely - fyi everything SketchUp’s rendering engine does is 8bit.

I just tried the file following doing the new update.

It works now.

This file is as I got it.

Update your SketchUp - it worked for me after yesterdays update.

still crashing on mac, despite the update.

plan.skp (5.0 MB)

I wonder if it will even open for you..

You must mean 8 bit/channel=32 bit. 8bit is the old VGA/GIF colour space.
In old times Sketchup used to not support CMYK Tiffs on the PC. Haven’t tried for a long time.

Read my post as of yesterday. I updated but still got a crash. I am on Mac.

I also detailed the procedure that allowed me to bypass the problem while staying on SU 2025.

I did try a resize to 16384 across in Preview. That locked up Preview for about an hour. It did eventually succeed, but by then I had resized it in Photoshop, and saw that it imported as image ok.

It still was having problem if imported for match photo.
