The dirty bits, the scruffy detail

It’s important to be aware of what makes something look real.
It’s often not the fancy bit of perfectly sculpted detail.
Nor the high gloss just off satin finish you’ve spent hours getting right.
So often it is the substance of the model, the very structure that can’t be overwritten with a special texture, the beautiful bones of a model.
As seen here, not the fingers, not the nails, but the gorgeous pliability in the flesh. The skill in the carving of the fingers is unquestioned but without the give of the flesh they are just cold stone.

These are the details you need to find to make a render real. Look for the error you can add, the tweak, the non symmetry, the soul. Break something, make a mess, rust, dirt, and reality make things real.
