Texture palette slow on MacOS Mojave

Hi

I’ve been using Sketchup Pro on Mac for a couple of years. I recently updated my computer to MacOS Mojave and suddenly it takes ages to switch between the lists on the texture palette. Switching list takes about 1 minute and it takes about 30 sec to select a texture. This is going to double the work time for each project I have. Has anyone had the same issue and perhaps a solution to this? Thanks!

Your profile indicates you are using SketchUp 18.0. Is that still correct?

Hey DaveR

Yes, that’s correct.

Well, the first thing you should do is update to 18.1 which was released, I think, back in October to fix some issues related to Mojave.

Are these texture “lists” you refer to custom libraries of textures? How many textures do they have in them?

Thanks! I’ll give the update a try.

Yeah, when compare speed to the default lists it is in fact my custom lists that are slow. At the moment they don’t have more than 20-30 textures per list.

When you select one of your local texture collections SketchUp has to iterate through all the SKM files in it and load the files. If the texture images are larger files (hi res), load time will be longer. You might consider refining your organization and splitting up the materials into smaller collections.

I have exactly the same problem

the mac Color Panel updates in SU v2020 have improved material handling…

crop and resize all external images before importing…

use sizes divisible by 2 and test on a 1 meter or 36 inch square in SU…

1024px at 72/96 dpi is high definition for most models

use sRGB ‘web’ optimised jpeg or png without alpha for most material imports…

use the in model slider for water, glass, etc and save that to your collection…

if actual image background transparency is needed for ‘decals’, ‘trees’, etc use png with alpha…

all other formats will impact file size and performance…

only turn on renderers when rendering a copy of your model and avoid modelling in that model…
