I’m a long time use of sketchup web and I can use it without an issue. I’ve just purchased a pro subscription so I can edit .DWG files and can’t even work the camera properly. Is there any way I can change the pro camera controls to the same as the web version such as using shift and option (alt on windows) to pan and orbit.
Hold Command+Control to get orbit temporarily, and then add shift to get pan - again only so long as you hold them down. I don’t know if you can reassign those - I’ve never tried.
Part of this isn’t quite right. You can briefly press the modifier keys, and once you are orbiting or panning, you can release the keys. Once released you are orbiting, but you can hold shift on its own to change to panning.
Ah, you are right. I have a hard time remembering this at all because I use a 3D Mouse all the time. It’s only when I’m stuck with just the track pad while traveling that I need this.
I want to add the fact that when you import a DWG, which is then new to you, it will quite change the way you are going to navigate into your model, compared to what you are used to in SketchUp free/web. Once your dwg is imported, you’re going to want to zoom in and out the whole thing, orbit and so on… but SketchUp will always take in account what you are pointing out with your mouse as a reference point.
And a freshly imported dwg has no face, it’s just lines
So sometimes you’re going to be lucky and your mouse will aim one of those tiny little lines and you’ll be able to orbit, zoom or pan just fine, but a millimetre away from one of them and you’ll be thrown out of space and it may be frustrating.
You have multiple options to avoid that, but the simplier is to draw a (at least temporary) rectangle covering all of your imported dwg (which should be imported as a component/group so you shouldn’t be scared of drawing a rectangle above it, not risking to interfere with existing lines) and you’ll notice the way you’re going to navigate inside your model will feel much more natural again !
Thanks for your reply, i know exactly what you mean. The zoom doesnt bother me much is more switching between pan and orbit being able to move around a model quickly and look at it from different angles. I find the web version suits me because I can change funcion by simply holding and releasing keys as opposed to pressing a button. What I have managed to do is change the key binds for orbit and pan to shift+x and ctrl+x to somewhat simulate what i’m used to with another click or two on the keys. Looks like its just something I’m going to have to endure and get used to!
Alright, maybe I was wrong then I guess I’m not used to the web version enough to get what YOU meant! I thought it was acting just the same, at least for navigation.
Anyway, my advice still is valuable when importing dwgs
I’m sure you’ll make your way into the pro version and quickly get used to it !
Just for others to reference in the future. There’s a lot of good tips on here from commenters so be sure to read them. The best solution for me was to go to SketchUp - Settings - Shortcuts and delete keybinds for camera pan orbit and zoom and set Camera/Orbit to Shift+X. When you press Shift+X it selects Orbit for use with left mouse click and drag, hold shift and it changes to pan using left mouse click and drag and on the mac trackpad you can zoom in and out with either selected with a 2 finger gesture forwards and backwards.
