Sleepless Night

Now that’s an odd looking motor thingy. Very cool even if I have no clue what I’m looking at.

It’s another one of those little machinist’s models. This one is about 4-1/8 in. tall overall. The piston oscillate as it runs. Probably not very much power available but it’s relatively simple. The long springs and the roods they are hooked on apply pressure to the cylinders to keep them up tight to the large plates where the steam inlet and outlet ports are.

I suppose I’m a bit simple minded. Always fascinated by early mechanical devices.

I’m with you on that.

Another view.

The silvery piece with all the holes is the lid for the oiler which is on the steam inlet. Seems to me it would act as a big heat sink and cool the steam too much. But who knows?

I think the oscillating engines were only used for small models and toys.

Mostly, yes.

Another quick little steam engine model.

As usual, screws and threads in holes left to do.

Here’s another tiny little engine. The flywheel on this one has a diameter of 76mm.

I shoved it to the back of the bench to await screws and cap nuts.

Another for the collection. Well done. :+1:

Thank you very much, sir.

Another horizontal engine. This was done while watching the heavy wet snow fall today.

Phew - we didn’t get that up here.

I like the ‘plain’ styling on this. But also the styles you’ve been using since about the time of the SU '25 rollout. Are you using ‘metalness’ to achieve those looks?

Yeah. Fortunately we didn’t get as much as the forecast but there’s still about 6 inches on the table on the deck. At least it’s heavy and wet though.

Thank you. As for the ones done in SketchUp 2025, yes that’s done in SketchUp without any rendering in a renderer.

Yeah right? I’m tired of spending so much time trying to hurt my back. I just want to get it done.

I have yet to play around with new styles. Spending too much time ‘fixing what aint broke’. But I’m afraid if I don’t give it a whorl soon, there’ll be no snow to stop me from having to go out and get some work!

Fortunately my son doesn’t seem to mind shoveling snow. After 70s last week I’m ready to be done with snow for a few months.

I haven’t had any problems with “broken” stuff. The new style options can be kind of a rabbit hole. Easy to get sucked in and the next thing you know you’re at a tea party with a bunch of weird people. :winking_face_with_tongue:

I spent years watching the radar 'til the wee hours in case I had to go out to shovel or plow… too worried I’d sleep through the whole thing if I tried ‘napping’ at night. So, yes. Let’s be done with snow. And I’d be fine with 75 degrees for the next months.

My ‘aint boke’ is an extension. It works… I just don’t like the default blue hover overs. 3 days later and I still don’t like them. I suppose it’s evident from my forum posts that I’m as mad as a hatter… so when I start messing with new style options I’ll be sure to tag you

Here’s a half dozen of the recent ones all together.
