Hi Guys, SketchUp beginner here! I am designing the facade of my new house and would like to also include some site context for rendering. Since placemaker and other similar extensions do not work in y country I decided to manually design the surrounding buildings.
Although I have a gaming mini pc, the file is heavy and lagging - I haven’t introduced textures and topography yet. Please note that I have purged multiple times, and tried keeping everything in groups - I still feel that I could have made some things neater and a bit more organized.
How do you normally deal with detailed site contexts?
Your statistics are not small and could probably benefit from some careful editing, but not really problematically large yet either, you have not yet cracked a million edges. As a general rule I would not expect to see a significant slow down with these numbers, even with a modest graphics card. I am curious about other settings that might account for the lagging you are experiencing. It would be useful to see your model, upload your .skp file for a more in depth answer. If it’s too large then upload to a file sharing service and include the sharing link here.
General tips for faster on screen rendering are to control visibility of high poly objects using tags, keep them turned off unless you need to work with them. Choose your default modeling style carefully to keep shadows, and profiles off (both require a lot of processing power to render), model in monochrome style. However it looks like you are using some of these settings already. Let’s see your model…
If you want to slim the model down I would recommend that you concentrate on the areas that look rather black in your image: railings, doors, especially garage doors etc. As the whole thing is only for entourage, for instance, the railings don’t have to be modelled all around. Modelling is much like building sets for theatre - cheating is the rule.
You model enough detail for the views you need. No need to have numbers on dials on appliances for a general kitchen layout, no need to have windows with every piece that is need by the shop to produce them.
And then context is also needed to be appropriate. I don’t need the whole neighborhood to model my front door, or even my house. Maybe just the neighbors and the detail in those buildings is only need to be sufficient to show intent, depending on circumstances.
And also, for exterior modeling showing context you like don’t need interior details modeled.
