Sketchup Pro 2026 gets "jerky" quicker than 2025 - memory use?

I noticed that 2025 would start getting jerky or not smooth responsive when it’s memory use as shown by task manager would start getting close to 8GB. 2026 exhibits the same issue around 5GB.

Any one in the development group got any input on this? How much memory can sketchup use and does it make a performance difference to have lots more on the computer? I’ve got 16GB on current machine. I find that if I save and restart the problem goes away for a while.

Do you have SketchUp set to use your dedicated Nvidia GPU?
(Getting close to 8GB sounds like perhaps running on the integrated Intel graphics which shares system RAM.)

Do you have SketchUp set to use the Classic OpenGL graphics engine or the new DirectX engine?

Window (menu) > Preferences (dialog) > Graphics (panel)

(On Windows, you will need to restart SketchUp after making changes.)

These are my settings from sketchup 2026:

When you hit on the dropdown menu where says use system default, what does it appear, if you have a cpu with integrated gpu and a discrete gpu you should have those options, select your discrete gpu.

You could also share your file so we can have a look at it and see if it can be improved.

It looks like your system defaults to the discrete Nvidia GPU. This is good.

The driver you have installed is old.

I am running version 32.0.15.8097 of the Studio driver and have no issues.
I also have a 16GB RAM system with a GTX 1060 w/ 6GB VRAM.

+1

you should grab the nvidia app to get the latest drivers.

it could make a difference.

I’ve set it in sketchup to use the nvidia gpu. seems to be better. will get updated driver.

Got latest studio driver. Made sure windows set to default to GPU as well. Seems better. Still got some stickyness as memory use hit 5800ish MB.

It definately is still getting “sticky”. If I do a save it will drop the memory use down, but then gets sticky again. Saving and closing fixes it for a while. I will try to pay more attention to CPU, GPU, and memory use in task manager, next time this happens - and I’m sure it will. Here is model statistics.

Are you using a “work” scene with a fast style to do your modeling?

I use mainly construction style. no images. fairly heavy use of components. Again it works great, then suddenly response becomes poor. when this happens memory usage is around 5-6 GB. Then it will catch up and get better. Saving makes it better, restarting more so. Task manager shows GPU usage jumping up. So that’s a good thing, that it is using the GPU. Probably a fools erand to think that seeing anything on task manager stats will help, other than a hard core loop. updating the drivers and 2026 update do seem to be better, until it hits whatever internal computation/data wall that is happening. Has not crashed and lost data or anything like that. In general I would say that this model is performing better on 2026 with than 2025. Possibly a little improvement from the nvidia driver upgrade, but very had to say. This is a 5 year old gaming laptop. Dell G3. 16GB, Core I7, Geoforce 1660Ti, SSD. Skechup on a 4k monitor, 3Dconnexion space mouse. At some point soon I’m going to get an upgraded computer. Just hate to spend money on some new super fast hardware, only to have Sketchup still coughing and spluttering. Would not be just for sketchup though.

What does this mean? Do you have a scene page dedicated to modeling, with textures switched off (monochrome render mode,) no edge extensions, edge profiles off, etc., ?
