Sketchup Bugsplat - External Components

Good Morning

Just a quick one on using external components.

In a recent project, I’ve had to make quite a bit of use of BIM Object to find various items for use, such as chairs and Lights, etc.

I always download these and then import into a new empty Sketchup file. If I open the file rather than import it, it reports that it was created in a previous version etc etc. Also, if I open it, I’m then stuck with the template in which it was created, which is often imperial. This is why I import it into a new file using my template.

On a few occasions, once I’ve done what I need to do and quit Sketchup, I get a Bugsplat. I have narrowed this down to only happening when I’ve been doing this with files created by others.

So, two questions, I guess;

  1. Is it best to open the downloaded file rather than import it? Then, do the cleaning up, then Save As? If I open it, how do I then change the file measurements from Imperial to metric? Would it be in the Model Preferences?

  2. Why would Importing it cause a Bugsplat on quiting?

Many thanks and Kind regards

Mike

another approach is to ‘open’ the download…

open a ‘new’ document…

copy paste the geometry of the item required into the new document and repair and save the result…

close the download without any modifications…

import the prepared item into main model…

without an example model it’s hard to say, but on quit splats are often extension related…

you can also copy paste the bugsplat reference number here and ping some team members to ‘maybe’ have a look…

Yeah, that seems to work @john_drivenupthewall. Thank you.

I’m sure the Bugsplats were related to importing the components as it’s the only time it ever does it.
