SketchUp 24: Hiding Complex Geom. Tags Doesn’t Improve Performance (Unlike 23)

Hi everyone,

I’ve run into a frustrating issue with SketchUp 2024 that I didn’t experience in 2023. I’m hoping someone can help me figure out what’s going on or if this is a known bug.

In 2024, hiding a tag with complex geometry (e.g., a large imported terrain model) doesn’t improve performance like it used to in 2023. When I get close to where the hidden complex model is—within about 10 feet—SketchUp becomes nearly unusable due to significant lag. This happens whether the tag is hidden or visible. When I zoom out, the lagging disappears, and I’ve found one workaround: switching to parallel projection eliminates the lag entirely. However, this isn’t ideal for my workflow.

For reference, this issue occurs across multiple models (3-4 tested so far), all of which ran smoothly in SketchUp 2023 with the same setup. I’ve tried troubleshooting extensively:

  • Reinstalled SketchUp 2024
  • Updated all drivers (GPU, etc.)
  • Tested all graphics settings combinations (new engine, classic engine, anti-aliasing off/low/high etc.)
  • numerous combinations of graphics settings

None of these made a difference except for the parallel projection fix. My rig should be more than capable:

  • 12th Gen Intel i7
  • 64 GB RAM
  • RTX 4070 Ti
  • Windows 11 pro
  • Dual 4K monitors (capped at 60 FPS)

Has anyone else encountered this? Is it a change in how 2024 handles hidden geometry, or could it be specific to my setup? I’d love to hear any insights or potential solutions—parallel projection helps, but I’d prefer to work in perspective mode without lag. Thanks in advance!

What you describe is a problem in 2024. We have it fixed in the next update. I can’t yet tell you when that update will be available.

Thank you for the response. Regretfully I wasted 8-10 hours trouble shooting this…
