SketchUp 2026 crashes when pressing ESC key to cancel Sample Paint Tool

A refreshing morning began with a cup of coffee.
Just as I was feeling motivated to get through today’s work, a tragedy occurred…

When I launch the Sample Paint Tool and press the ESC key to cancel the tool selection before sampling a material, SketchUp 2026 crashes. This happens even with a brand-new, unsaved .skp file.
Additionally, the same crash occurs when selecting “Use classic graphics engine” from the Preferences menu.

Is this a known bug? If anyone knows the cause or solution, I would appreciate it if you could let me know.

Yep just recreated on Win 11. Crash #155279 & #155281

Good news is that you can avoid the crash by switching to the Select Tool.

Thank you for your advise!
I’m aware of that, but it doesn’t really solve the problem… I’d like to know what the root cause is.

If it’s just a bug, I might as well wait while I have another cup of coffee.

Of course it’s a bug. They don’t purposefully design in crashes.

Another workaround is to activate the Paint Bucket tool, then tap the ALT key to go into sample mode. (In this mode ESC does not do anything and does not crash. It just waits until you sample a material then switches back to Paint Bucket with what you sampled as the active material.)

Thank you for suggesting an alternative!
I had overlooked use the ALT key with the Bucket Tool, so it was very helpful.

All the best,
