Sketching lines on floor in plan view

Hi! I draw floor plans for work regularly and have encountered an annoying quirk that I hope there is a workaround for. I have a model of the exhibit space that I like to sketch in to present different ideas for exhibition wall layouts. The way I’d like to do that is use the line tool and work in the top view. However, if I start a line from an existing structure in top view, it inevitably starts from the top of the structure. Even if I start from the line representing the baseboard (as shown in the screenshots), the line protrudes from the top of the baseboard, rather than the floor. I need the line to start from where the baseboard meets the floor, because then I use those lines to pull the walls up.

Any thoughts?

I would create a new tag that is just 2D. That way you can set up scenes and easily toggle between 3D and 3D. Copy/paste in place on different tags would make this pretty simple.

Expanding on what @KyleB said, you can create a large plan on the ground, at the Z-value were you want to draw your lines at. Then interesect that plane with your building model to get a 2D linework only plan. Hide the 3D walls or turn off those tags, save camera and Tag/visibility state to a ‘Drawing’ scene and Bam! Bob’s your uncle.

Thanks!

I did not know you could do that, thank you!

SketchUp is always 3D. If you have allready pulled up some walls and look from the top down, all you can see is the lines from the top of your walls. It is logical that if you draw a line in that view, it will start at the top of your wall. SketchUp only “sees” those top lines, just like you..
