Perhaps a shrinkwrap is not really needed as a separate extension? Perhaps Solid Tools can do the job?
Are you thinking about adding a tool that operates on raw geometry or non-solid objects, in an extension (Solid Tools) that only works with solid objects?
Do you have any workflow examples for this?
Have you watched the clip I linked? To me it seems straight forwrd that the solid tools could very well function as a shrink wrap tool.
Essentially you want to keep all outer geometry and get rid of internal (obscured) geometry, it seems as though that can very well be achieved with the solid tools.
Shrinkwrap tool doesn’t do that. Have you used blender? Do you know what retopology is and its purpose? Outer shell or union tools are not similar to what shrinkwrap tool does at all.
OK, so how about we set aside what a shrinkwrap tool does in Blender, as this is a SketchUp forum / comunity, and focus on what we envisage a shrinkwrap tool in SU should do. Comparing SU tools and capabilities with Blender is like comparing apples and sausages.
How about we be clear and specific about it, like you’ve thought about what you actually need and your use case.
For SketchUp users who want to improve their knowledge and the models they work with.
Creating a lightweight model starting from a very detailed model. Very useful in SketchUp and especially LayOut, to avoid unnecessarily bloating the file.
Highpoly to lowpoly using Shrinkwrap and baking a pillow
highpoly pillow - 112000 triangles
lowpoly pillow - 512 triangles
- Shrinkwrap 1/2 - high to lowpoly geometry
- Shrinkwrap 2/2 - baking texture high to lowpoly
Export this model as OBJ for SketchUp.

I’m not comparing SketchUp to Blender, I mentioned it because a shrinkwrap tool in SketchUp should do what the shrinkwrap tool does in blender. It was mentioned before, you should read the entire thread and look at the videos Mihai and I shared showing how the shrinkwrapping works in blender and some ways to do it on SketchUp. You clearly don’t know what this tool is for, probably because you don’t need it but solid tools is nothing even close to what shrinkwrapping is, align ends, clothworks or even flowify are the closest we have to shrinkwrap in SketchUp.
This thread was created by Fredo to talk about shrinkwrapping since he is one of the most talented developers and has interest on developing useful tools for SketchUp users.
