Same file -slow on more powerful hardware, faster on older PC

A client of mine faces a peculiar issue -the exact same SKP file performs fine on older hardware (AMD Ryzen 3800X, 32GB of DDR4 RAM, 4070 Super) yet is super laggy on newer, much more powerful hardware (AMD Ryzen 9950X3D, 64GB of DDR5 RAM, 5070 Ti 16GB). Graphics options are the same, both computers have fresh Windows 11 Pro installations, both use the latest Nvidia studio drivers and the latest available Sketchup 2026 build.

I’m at a loss here -the new computer performs as it should on other applications. What could the issue be?

I asume you already have tried to use a different graphic settings on the slower machine, like using the new/classic graphic engine?

AMD Ryzen 9950X3D has integrated graphics - we’ve seen users who have connected their machine to the wrong displayport/HDMI and end up using this instead.

Users with multiple displays are always more prone to issues also. Use just a single one whilst troubleshooting.

Visit the windows graphics switching settings, the AMD graphics switching settings, the nvidia graphics switching setting, and the BIOS’ controls.

If you have a BIOS option, you may simply want to disable that IGPU altogether and remove it from the equation.

I should have clarified that I’ve made sure the iGPU is disabled and the 5070 Ti card is selected in Sketchup’s settings. The user has a single monitor, connected to the dGPU. At this point I’m guessing I’ll have to try older studio drivers…

HDMI, Display Port, USBC, etc? What is the connection?

Years ago when I was on PC I had terrible performance over HDMI.

traditionally the edge and profile rendering is the most stressful part for SketchUp - If you disable edges and lines and it seems improved then you can often identify between whether you are GPU or CPU bound.

Client also tried the same file on an even less powerful PC. A Ryzen 3800x with 32gigs of RAM and a GTX 1660 Super. It’s still super fast.

But on the 9950x3D + 5070 Ti the viewport is lagging-stuttering. This is insane. Could there be a specific bug with the X3D chip?

wouldn’t surprise me, when sketchup 24 was released (with the new engine), there were problems with AMD chips and transparency.

we had a similar situation on macs, where some brand new M3 and M3pro machines had bugs and instabilities that the older M1 and 2 (and later M4) didn’t have.

I can’t tell you more, but the dev team is working on performance for the next releases. your case might be an interesting one, in the way that maybe your new machines are “too powerful” for su26, but at least they should be made adequate for 27 ?
