Here’s the deal: I love modeling. It is one of the few things in this world/galaxy/universe that holds my attention so much, that I get to plan my workflows and the tools I’ll use for them 5 steps ahead in my brain.
I also love the reality capture world, so I’m often working with point clouds and TIN meshes of various formats, the latter can sometimes look like something an AI CAD system has made. These are meshes that I’d really like to retopologize, make corners, etc.
Anyway, if you take a look at the attached file, which is a Harken cam cleat that I just bought for my sailboat. Here is the link to the product, but I’m wondering: what are your workflows to improve a mesh like this? What extensions do you use? Do you explode it or use layers to keep things organized?
Were you actually able to get it that clean in SketchUp?
Yeah, a lot of times I’m creating a new model and only using the mesh as a reference. There have been plenty of times where messing with the imported mesh just isn’t worth it. What I usually do in that case is import the mesh into CloudCompare and subsample the texture off the object at a very high density value and then bring it in with ScanEssentials for texturing with the point cloud.
As much as I have always wanted to get into Blender, I just can’t seem to do it. I absolutely understand its an awesome piece of CAD and even has this functionality, I just can’t seem to get farther than opening the software. I’ll go through a tutorial or two and lose interest.
Yeah, I have QuadFace tools, I can’t quite get it to work on the model I shared and I’m not sure why. Vertext Tools are great and SUbD is as well.
