Reset global axis is temporary?!

I’ve moved and rotated my model so it aligns with an imported dwg file. (If I get sent an updated dwg i can just import it to the same place..). But now when I draw or move my objects/ groups components they move along the original axes which don’t match the dwg model. So I right click the axis and select Reset, and it is now in the right place, aligned with my model and the dwg.

BUT if i save and close, when i reopen the file the axis have gone back to the original position…?

Is the reset command only temporary?

Did you save the scene tab with the modified axes ?
This should be remembered across sessions ?

I think you forgot to use “Update Scene” command.
(Usps, TIG posted it while I typed )

Thanks for the answers and while correct and greatly appreciated, they suggest that the axes are scene dependent? is it not possible to set the global axes for the entire model to a point of your own choosing? (i.e. so its the same in all scenes)

You can set the global axes to a point of your own choosing but if you’ve already got scenes made that have saved the axes location, selecting any of those scenes will show that axis position. Keep in mind that changing the axes location does not change where the origin (0,0,0) is in the model space. That is a fixed point.

aah. (Hi Dave!) so the fact that I have scenes with saved axis locations is overriding the global axis. And will continue to do so if i reset the global axis.

If I reset the global axis and Then reset the axis in the scenes, I think i’ll be where i want to be (!). How do i reset the global axis (i thought it was the global axis I was resting when i started this post, saying that it was resetting and i was told it was because i didnt save the scene. Full circle! Catch22?!

Hi Paul,

Well, yes. If you select a scene that has the axes positioned differently than before you select the scene, the axes will move to that position. Note that Axes Location is listed in the Properties to Save and Properties to Update for scenes.

If you want to change the axes for the existing scenes to where you currently have them placed, you can select the scenes in the Scenes panel and then click on the Update button. In the Properties to Update panel, untick all but Axes Location and then update.

Do you want to reset the global axes to their default location (crossing at (0,0,0) and green pointing north? If so, right click on one of the axis lines while the Camera is in Perspective mode and choose Reset. Then, if you want to fix the axes for all of the scenes, update the scenes as above.

update

For what it’s worth you can do that for other scene properties such as Styles. Be very careful about updating Camera Location, though. You can imagine that might make a mess. And of course you can update properties for a limited selection of scenes, too.

.. I did not know that (the origin is a fixed point, regardless axis position)

Did not know what?

Sorry replied to your comment re origin.. obvs need a refresh in how comments work in the forum lol

Do you mean that the origin cannot be moved?

I feel a need to clarify:

The model coordinate system (origin and axes), sometimes called the “global coordinates”, is fixed and cannot be modified.

There is also a concept of “drawing” or “working” coordinates, which is what the various drawing tools use. The drawing coordinates are initially aligned with the model coordinates, but you can move and rotate them to make drawing operations simpler or to establish a particular view of the model. Doing so has no effect on the underlying model coordinates. When you right-click an axis and choose “Reset”, the working coordinates are set back to the model coordinates.

The working coordinates can be saved in a scene if the appropriate boxes are checked in the scene properties. To save them, you update the scene. Thereafter, the view will return to the working coordinates each time you revisit it.
