Rash on my model due to non-existing features

Layout being sluggish is something I am already accustomed to. I wait with rendering to the last moment; try to do everything in raster first.. Then, after a waiting period, because I usually choose Hybrid rendering, I discover rashes on my models:

To me, it is unclear where they come from. What sorcery is this? The lines that do from top to bottom are in 1 piece.

it’s called bleeding. face have no thickness, therefore if something is right behind a face, sometimes it bleeds through.

the simple solution is to actually hide things that are not supposed to be visible. like with a tag. it’ll make your export quicker too, because layout still needs to render the whole scene in order to determine what’s visible and what’s not (in the end result)

what would help as well is to make your models simpler. that’s a lot of hidden lines, your layout file might benefit from a more frugal 3d model and/or better tagging system (allowing you to simply hide all that is not supposed to be seen)

also, your profile says you’re using sketchup 23 (but your profile is from 2024 so might just not be up to date)
Recent sketchup / layout versions have taken some steps toward better performances. you might want to try the new engine in both SU and LO to see if it’s better.

Thanks. Faces do have thickness though, 2 mm. Also, everything can be toggled off to simplify the models, however, because of lagging on the part of Layout I make the 2D vision of a model in Sketchup, meaning:

this simplifies lining everything up in Layout. To do this reliably is to take the same model and copy it. Then embed it in a ‘2D layer’. Still, everything is inside it; a change to 1 piece is a change to all pieces. You suggest to create a myriad of additional layers to cater to the preferences of Layout? Sorry to be too defiant but getting a rash on my models really upsets me.

yeah, that’s still bleeding. it’s too thin.

the minimum line in sketchup is 1px thin.
bleeding happens when you zoom out so much that the thickness of your model becomes less than 1px. Sketchup and layout are then in a predicament, they have something so thin that they can’t represent it and right behind it are a bunch of lines.

yeah, but the lagging in layout is due to the fact the insides of your model are made with way too much details. it’s a snake eating their tail, you make a complex model, layout lags, therefore you prepare the layout in sketchup, but now layout has to process 3x the amount of geometry… you see the paradox ? :slight_smile:

yeah, it’s normal component behaviour. I wouldn’t recommend doing that in sketchup, HOWEVER if you have to do it in sketchup, this is THE way :wink:

a myriad ? no. just 2 tags.
One for the outside of the water fountain.
One for the insides.
Different elements can have different tags within a component.

need a close-up on the plumbing ? turn on the inside tag.
need a front / side / top view ? turn off the inside tag. simple as that.

most things people model in sketchup could be “outside skins”. most people who need your drinking fountain won’t need the inside plumbing.
if you need it, add it to a tag, and you’ll be able to switch from one to the other.

Faces do not have thickness. The parts of the object you made with faces may have a thickness… but faces do not.

2mm is too thin at the scale of a building / room / architecture for the graphics not to fight with each other and bleed through.

yet as I zoom out, and click on it, sketchup is not as sure as I am whether I want to select the roof or the insulation below.

if I zoom out a bit more, I can see the rafters. because at that zoom, 5cm thick becomes less than a pixel on screen.
it depends on your GPU, on your screen resolution, the thickness of things…

therefore, if I want to do a distant view, I might have to hide the structure tag.
