Purging causes crash

Lately when I go to purge components or materials Sketchup crashes. This sucks as now I have a bloated model but can’t get rid of the bloat because I crash. This has happened with several of my models. Please help.

Where is the file saved while you are working on it.

Share the .skp file so we can try to purge it and figure out what the problem is.

All my files are save to Dropbox.

While you’re working on them? That’s a good way to wind up with corrupted files. Loads of examples of this scattered throughout the forum.

I’ll look at your file,

Try downloading the file to your computer before you open it and do the purge.

I went through the usual cleanup procedure. First I fixed incorrect tag usage. ALL edges and faces should be created and remain untagged.

Surprisingly there was almost nothing unused to purge in the model.

I did reduce the excessively large texture images and ran CleanUp3 to merge materials and reduce the edge and face counts. All in all the cleanup reduced the file size by about 15%. Not nearly as much as I would have expected but them you have a lot of overly detailed components in your model You could replace them with lighter ones or edit them to simplify them. An extension like Skimp would make quick work of that.

Thanks for your help. I draw for other designers so I have to put in the finishes and furniture pieces they select so I can’t always use lighter models. I’ve been using Suapp AIM to create the 3d furniture pieces. I do try to use skimp to simplify them though. So, should I save the model to my computer while working on it and then move it to dropbox?

That would explain a lot of their obesity.

As an example, there’s a lot of unneeded geometry on the bottom of this sectional. This is after running CleanUp3 to merge coplanar faces.

Those extra edges and faces are adding anything useful to the component so they are not an asset. They are all liability.

A couple of other examples that hgave the hallmark of being generated by AI. Neither of these pieces should have all this triangulation.

I can’t imagine that it’s faster to get AI to make either of these pieces than it would be to create efficient components from scratch with native tools.

Yes. Do not work on files that are saved directly to the cloud. Make sure thefiles are saved to an internal drive on your computer.

You should also be saving backup copies of your files to Trimble Connect. You’ve have unlimited storage as part of your subscription. You should use it.

Thank you for your advice. Although I’ve gotten better at SU, I still have a lot to learn.
